From the Office of Academic Initiatives and Strategic Innovation
Dear Members,

We hope that you are enjoying your summer study group sessions.

Fall 2022 registration will close at the end of the day on Wednesday, June 22. Continue to submit your study group requests using the registration form, and remember to refer to instructions available right here as well as the fall study group grid here.

Last week, we updated the registration form to reduce the number of required choices (indicated by an *) from 4 to 3. Please be sure that your first-choice study group is ranked in preference 1, your second choice in preference 2, your third choice in preference 3, and so on. The more options listed, the better!

For members interested in only taking two study groups, we ask you to list the third choice as a backup in case we cannot place you in your second choice due to the popularity of some study groups. You will not be required to take three study groups, and every effort will be made to provide all members with their first and/or second choices.

Study group schedules and rosters will be distributed the week of July 11. Please note that you will be able to adjust your schedule as needed during the Add/Drop period between July 11 and July 25.

We know that some members are concerned about or unable to attend study groups in person this fall. We hear your concerns and understand the apprehension and uncertainty given the continued Covid-19 pandemic.

However, we reassure you that we are working closely with the Curriculum Committee and the Advisory Board to find alternatives should we need to accommodate a greater number of remote study group participants. The hard-working Fall 2022 study group coordinators are thinking through scenarios that might include additional Zoom sessions and more HyFlex options.

Once the registration period closes, we will have a clearer picture of what adjustments might be necessary. Our office will support those changes and transitions.

GC Campus Tours

Get ready to attend study groups in person this Fall with a tour of the Graduate Center campus. The tour will include a preview of classrooms and public spaces in the building and a Q&A session addressing the nitty-gritty of campus access: student ID cards, Graduate Center email accounts, COVID policies, and using the library.  All tours will be capped at 12 attendees.

  • June and July GC Campus tours are fully booked. We will release August tour dates by mid-July.
  • If you’re coordinating a Fall 22 study group, please contact your Curriculum Committee liaison to learn more about the coordinator-specific campus tours later this summer.
  • If you’re a new member, you should have received information about your campus tour date from your mentor and the Orientation Committee.
WHAT'S NEW?
NEW Break Activity

Poetry and Bites
with Terry Hamilton and Susan & Ron Forlenza
Tuesday, July 12 @ 1:00 - 3:30PM,

Join this gathering of up to twelve people in a Harlem brownstone backyard (inside if it rains) for an afternoon of poetry and a lite lunch, wine and lemonade.

Guests need only bring from one to three short poems they like and a brief background of the poet. Any poetry style is fine and can include poets who live or lived in Harlem. Each participant will get a few minutes to lead the discussion of what the poem means. Terry, Susan and Ron will mind the time and keep the discussion flowing. One flight of steps to the parlor floor and one flight of steps to the backyard. Also bring socks; it’s a shoes-off apartment.

RSVP to Terry Hamilton at [email protected]. Limited to the first 12 people who sign up only. Terry will email guests the address and transportation details.
