Homelessness in Oceanside
|
The complex societal challenge of homelessness has been exacerbated in recent years due to laws that limit actions cities can take, if there are no available shelter beds. The City plans to open a transitional homeless shelter with wrap-around day services to help people obtain stability and transition into permanent housing. A public survey will be released for input on shelter locations.
In other efforts, staff are working to end homelessness every day. With the addition of Measure X funding, the City has been able to make more progress in housing homeless residents through Bridge Housing, a Family Reunification Program, a Homeless Diversion/Prevention Program, a Landlord Incentive Program, and the expansion of the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), which travels with a social worker to provide resources and opportunities.
In 2020, the City moved 62 homeless residents into Bridge Housing, with 43 moving into permanent housing. In addition, the City recently opened a Sobering Services Center. Thousands of cities across the U.S. are grappling with the complexities of this societal issue; homelessness can not be solved by cities alone. We invite you to become involved.
