Police Chief Survey ~ Provide your input!
|
After 36 years in law enforcement, Oceanside Police Chief McCoy announced his plans to retire. McCoy is the longest-serving Police Chief in the history of the department. The City developed a survey to gather input from the community. The survey is available in English and Spanish, and hard copies are available at various public counters throughout the City. The recruitment process for the Police Chief is on hold while the survey is conducted and results are analyzed. The results will help to inform the next steps in the recruitment process. Thank you for taking a few moments to provide your feedback by October 5. SURVEY

Construction on Douglas Dr. / N. River Road
|
Construction of the new Pure Water Oceanside and Recycled Water pipelines have begun in the area of North River Road and Douglas Drive, moving towards Douglas and Pala Road. Rolling lane closures will occur through December while the pipeline is constructed across the San Luis Rey River. Traffic delays may occur. A minimum of one lane will remain open in each direction and the contractor will remove temporary traffic control outside of working hours to open up the flow of traffic during high travel times. There will be a period of time where one lane on Douglas Dr. will be closed 24 hours/day while the pipeline river crossing is being constructed. Alternate travel routes may be preferred to avoid congestion. The pipeline will convey advanced treated water to injection wells for Pure Water Oceanside and expand the distribution of recycled water to a greater area of the City. Details and Map

Measure X funded road work is occurring throughout the City. This week, slurry seal road work is taking place in Ocean Hills, Guajome South, North Valley, and Airport neighborhoods. Slurry seal jobs will be complete in November. More extensive overlay work is also taking place. See locations. Industry Street is undergoing a full-depth reclamation, whereby the existing roadway is pulverized and partially removed before replacement. Industry Street work should be completed by month's end. More information on road work. Measure X, passed by Oceanside voters in November 2018, raised the sales tax in Oceanside by one-half cent for a period of seven years. The revenue from the half-cent is dedicated to improve public safety, roads, infrastructure, and address homelessness. Measure X Information

Beach Sand Replenishment / Retention
|
The Oceanside Public Works Department initiated a feasibility study that seeks to develop a strategy to protect City beaches from the impacts of long-term shoreline erosion. A preliminary engineering evaluation and feasibility study is being developed to consider options for beach sand replenishment and/or retention devices to stabilize and enhance the beach widths in the City. The goal of the study is to identify a beach replenishment/retention strategy that is environmentally sensitive, financially feasible and has a reasonable chance of being approved through the regulatory permitting process. A well-attended virtual public workshop was held September 15, 2020 to review concepts and receive feedback. If you missed it, please review the presentation online:

Temporary Closure of The Strand to Vehicles
|
As part of the Beachfront Improvements Project, a two-block section of The Strand between Seagaze Drive and Pier View Way will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic for sewer line activities and concrete replacement. Pedestrian access will remain available. This will occur in the first week of October and is estimated to reopen in 6-8 weeks. The Beachfront Improvements Project is funded largely by a grant award of nearly $8 million from the State of California Natural Resources Agency. The project remodels the historic bathhouse building to serve as a new Police Department Substation. A new building will be constructed to include restrooms and inviting storefront areas. A new, wider staircase will be built with a landscaped viewing area. The existing sewer lift station is being reconstructed. Learn more about this exciting project: Video

Street sweeping schedules are returning to normal with complete coverage after a period where we were replacing several retiring employees and training new sweepers. Staff is urging people to move cars that have been sitting idle, so that the sweeper can reach the curb. Trash and debris that cannot be reached pollutes creeks, rivers and ocean by being swept up by storm water. The resumption of street sweeping enforcement will be announced soon, but we encourage all to move cars for the sweeper regularly in the meantime. More

Early in the pandemic, the Oceanside City Council allocated funding for a COVID-19 Emergency Food Distribution Program. As one arm of the program, Neighborhood Services staff partnered with Botanical Community Development Initiatives (BCDI) for freshly grown produce for Oceanside residents suffering financial impacts. BCDI collaborated with over 30 local farmers to assemble 200 fresh produce boxes each week for Oceanside residents (pictured below).
