"Since our last chat..."
"Since our last chat..." is a periodic column in The Causeway by Bar member Barb Townsend.

At the Court House, I was still bemoaning the necessity to submit to a security search every time I need to file a document, show up for a hearing, or go to check on a docket. With this small inconvenience agitating me, I saw Christopher L. Reibsome, Esq., talking with a young, tall, muscular gentleman in the hall on the third floor. I noted the white shirt and tie, but no jacket. His relaxed demeanor identified him as someone familiar with the Court House. The men were discussing rugby, so as I walked past, since the conversation was casual, I introduced myself to the younger gentleman. I was introduced to 'Jeb' Keller, Esq., law clerk to President Judge Van Horn and son of John N. Keller, Esq., and grandson of John W. Keller, Esq. I could not miss that there had been a completion of a circle.

President Judge Carol Van Horn began her legal career here in Franklin County as Judge John W. Keller's law clerk. Judge Keller taught many of us from the bench. He was patient, but firm with young attorneys learning the profession. Judge Keller's son, John N. Keller, Esq., was admitted to the bar in Franklin County in 1978. John N. Keller's son, John B. "Jeb" Keller, Esq., is the latest member of the family to be admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar. Hopefully he will sign the Franklin County register in December, 2016. This sounded like a story, so I headed to Waynesboro to follow the lead.

When I arrived at Keller, Keller and Beck, LLC, I decided to start where I might get the real news. I interviewed Roxanne Martin, staff person to four generations of Kellers. Roxanne recalled that John W. Keller, Esq., "John W.", later President Judge Keller, had his Waynesboro office over the old J.C. Penny Building on the main street in Waynesboro. Roxanne noted that John W. had been her Sunday school teacher. After she graduated from high school, she took a job at the Department of Public Roads in Washington, D.C. Finding that 'boring', she was delighted when her mother, Betty Oshel, told her that she had an interview with John W. He offered her a job in 1965, which she gladly accepted. Moving back to Waynesboro allowed her to proceed with her wedding plans, so she married David H. Martin in August, 1966. They celebrated their fiftieth anniversary this past August 27th.

Roxanne said that John W.'s father, N.F. Keller, Esq., who had been admitted to the Franklin County Bar on April 23, 1917, was still practicing and reporting for work when she began work at John W.'s practice. Roxanne explained that John W., was elected judge of the Court of Common Pleas for the 39th Judicial District in the fall of 1968. She accepted a position as his judicial assistant/secretary in Franklin County, starting in January, 1969. Roxanne resigned about two weeks before she delivered her first child, her daughter, in December, 1969. She continued to have children, and stayed primarily at home for a number of years, ending with four children: three boys to join their older sister. During her years as a full time parent, she continued to work free lance for attorneys in Waynesboro, taking divorce testimony in the era of fault divorces, and doing the bookkeeping for various businesses.

In 1988, Roxanne, ready to return to the full time work force, was hired by Patterson, Kaminski, Keller and Kiersz. She was assigned to John N. Keller, Esq., "John N.", and his brother, David S. Keller, Esq., the attorney who practices primarily criminal law and not the attorney by the same name who is a County Commissioner. She stayed with them as the various changes in membership of the law firm changed and has been with Keller, Keller and Beck, LLC, since about 2004 or 2005.

Roxanne admits to loving to dance: swing, ballroom, and rock and roll. She noted that she admired John W. for wanting to help people and noted he was honest and fair. Now that Jeb has joined the firm, she has a claim of working for four of the five generations and five of the six Keller attorneys. I noticed that she was very careful to avoid protracted answers...We sometimes overlook how well our staff represents us.

I then met with John N. Since I knew his parents, we review some of John W.'s life. He noted that John W. graduated from Gettysburg and then from Dickinson School of Law in 1951. John W. was admitted to the Franklin County Bar in March, 1952, after serving a preceptorship. By that time he was already married to "Margie", having married Margaret in 1949.
Judge Keller

Although Margie died in 1997, John N. noted that, while his father was on the bench, Margie and John W., would have lunch every Thursday in Chambersburg at Olympia. For years behind Olympia Candy Kitchen, there was a luncheon restaurant which served sandwiches, ice cream and Sundaes. That was their usual destination. I recall frequently seeing them walking near the Chambersburg fountain, hand in hand, Margie being a small, delicate woman and John W., over 6 feet tall with sturdy Germanic features and a solid build. Judge Keller died in April, 2012.

John Niemond Keller, Esq., (grandson of Niemond Frederick Keller, Esq.) practices civil litigation, primarily Plaintiff's and insurance defense cases. John N. is a 1970 graduate of Waynesboro High School and 1974 graduate of Gettysburg College, where he majored in sociology. John N. then went to Villanova Law School, earning his JD in the spring of 1977. He first took a job in West Chester in the general practice of law, but returned to Franklin County to join our bar in August, 1978. John's brother, David S. Keller, joined in December, 1983.

John N. was hired as an assistant District Attorney by Senior Judge John R. Walker. [OK, I am familiar with too many individuals named John, but there are three in my family. It was the way families named their progeny]. In 1978, John Walker was District Attorney. Because of the conflict, John N. would primarily appear in front of Judge Eppinger. Have him tell you, if he will, the story of a trial in front of Judge Eppinger regarding a member of the Chambersburg Police Department and another assistant District Attorney, John R. Nelson, riding shotgun, in the era before DNA testing.

John worked at the law firm of Beck, Paterson, Kaminski, Keller and Kiersz until Ed Beck left to work for the Reagan Administration. John Sharpe used to call the firm Oil and Sheets, but that's another column. John N. then outlined the history of the various modifications and permutations of the firm and its name. Attorneys Stephen D. Kulla, Janice M. Hawbaker, John Frey, Mark Pettigrew, among others were associated with the Keller brothers from the late seventies to present, even if a name did not appear in the letterhead. John N. served as president of the Franklin County Bar Association from 2009 to 2010.

John married his wife Dudley during his first year in law school. They have a marriage that has endured forty-one years. They have two children, Alexis, "Lexie", who lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband whom she met in Thailand, and Jeb. Dudley has had employment in admissions and development for Gettysburg College, Hood College, Wilson College and the City of Frederick, Maryland. She's currently enjoying some retirement.

John N. loves reading, focusing on American History. He quickly recommended two books: Mohawk Baronet: A Biography of Sir William Johnson by James T. Flexner and Custer's Trials by T. J. Stiles. John N. was quick to point out that the second book is not about the famous battle, but about the life, times and politics of the era in which Custer lived.

Jeb joined us. He is now working at Keller, Keller and Beck, LLC, full time. Jeb represents the sixth Keller to practice law in Pennsylvania, fifth in Franklin County. He succeeded Rosby Carr, Esq. as President Judge Van Horn's law clerk, after Rosby was hired by District Attorney Matt Fogal. Jeb, however, has a few life experiences in other fields.

David Keller, Roxanne Martin, Jeb Keller, and John Keller

Jeb attended Mercersburg Academy for his first year of high school, but he graduated from Waynesboro High School in 2002. He matriculated to the University of Delaware to play football, later transferring to Shippensburg University, graduating with a degree in Human Communications Studies in 2006. Jeb began coaching football at Waynesboro High School, while still a student at SU after a series of knee injuries ended his college football career. Jeb coached from 2005 through the 2011 football season. He has also helped with the heavyweight wrestlers at the High School over the past few years.

If you get a chance, watch Will Smith in the movie "Concussion". Jeb plays a high school football coach. He actually has some lines.

click here to read about Jeb's acting role in Concussion.

In addition to bit parts and acting, Jeb's been a substitute teacher, a banker, and an insurance salesman. But in 2012, he started at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Jeb received his JD in the spring of 2015. He also served as president of his law school class.

I asked for a funny story. Jeb mentioned his public singing debut. A family tiff about when this actually happened might have continued, but Roxanne was consulted to provide timing. It seems that Jeb was permitted to walk home from school from an early age. He had the habit on the way home to stop at Patterson, Kaminski, Keller and Kiersz on Main Street in Waynesboro, often accompanied by classmates. The objective of the stop was to liberate some soda. The incident everyone recalls, however, was the day Jeb arrived at the office, headed to the public bathroom, locked the door and began singing. Roxanne had to go get John. Everyone could hear the child's voice and it was a bit distracting. John tried the door. At this point, there was a dispute about how the debut ended...did Dad unlock the door? Or, did his persuasive powers convince the youngster to open the door? The siege by voice ended. So, you are not the only parent to be thoroughly inconvenienced and embarrassed by your child...just remember, when they are teens, all you do is embarrass them.
