October 2023 Issue #4

From District Governor Russ-

Did you ever wonder why October is the 10th month rather than the 8th month as you would expect based on the prefix “Octo?”

October was originally the eighth month of the Roman calendar It was only later that January and February were added to the calendar, pushing October to its current position as the tenth month. Here in Michigan and Ontario, we think of apples and trips to the cider mill, football and fall color tours.

As Rotarians, we probably think of World Polio, October 24. Please make sure to send your End Polio Now event information to Sue Goldsen for posting to the District 6400 website and Facebook page.  After your event, send Sue your pictures and story. As of September 13, there have been 7 new cases worldwide, 5 in Afghanistan and 2 in Pakistan. We are so close and hope to have 2024 be the first year with zero new cases. For more information on Polio and our efforts to eradicate it, go to https://www.endpolio.org/ and https://polioeradication.org/.

The 2023 DG club tour continues in October with 13 more club visits scheduled.  Through September, Barb & I have visited 36 of the 55 clubs. I want to come to your events too. Please give me as much advance notice as possible. On September 18, district golfers and guests came to the Grosse Ile Country club for a fun golf outing and dinner. We had wonderful weather, a challenging course, and a delicious meal to supporting the District 6400 World Community Service Matching Grants program.

Our area of focus for October is Community Economic Development. Approximately 795 million people — or 1 in 9 people in the world — do not have enough to eat. Sixty percent of the world’s hungry people are women and girls. Seventy percent of the world’s poorest people live in rural areas and depend on agriculture and related activities for their livelihood. To address these and related issues, Rotary often focuses on projects to improve people’s access to financial services and microloans, sustainable farming practices and develop job creation and entrepreneurship skills.  For more information go to https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/growing-local-economies.

At almost all my club visits, the club leadership have questions on how they can recruit more members.  Maintaining and growing membership is a basic task as vital to a club as breathing is to humans.  While each situation, particularly member engagement, is different, I have a few ideas for finding new members that can apply to most clubs.

  1. A person’s first personal Rotary experience should be an activity, not a club visit. The exception would be a major speaker such as a well-known community leader.
  2. Volunteer your club to work with other community groups including churches and networking organizations such as chambers of commerce or ask those groups to help with your community service projects.
  3. When someone asks about Rotary, tell them a story about why you joined Rotary or important moments in your Rotary life. Experiences are more impactful than listing all the great projects your club does to improve the community.

Make sure to join Barb & I at the “Celebrate! The Rotary Foundation” event on November 9.  For more information and to register, see below and visit

http://rotary6400.org/?page_id=5984. We are looking forward to seeing all of you there and at other events throughout the district.
