A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The deadline for occupying benchmarks of the Geoid 2018 model has come and gone and it appears we were able to occupy about 70% of the benchmarks. A big shout out to all who participated and especially to John Tosto for taking the helm on this one. It should pay big dividends in the future.

Speaking of success, the Cal Poly Pomona Conference was well attended and Professor Ng is to be commended for a job well done. Yours truly had the privilege of participating on a panel discussion on the topic of CLSA. The panel consisted of CLSA Past President Ian Wilson, CLSA Treasurer Rob McMillan, and Member at Large Kevin Hills. The audience had good questions and interaction with the panel.

On October 18 th and 19 th, CLSA had a presence at the California Association of School Counselors (CASC) Conference in Riverside. Thanks to Rob McMillan, Bill Hofferber, Kevin Hills, and Chu Man Kow for manning a booth where over 1,500 participants attended. We accumulated a list of over 40 signatures requesting surveyors to come to their schools and participate in their career days or give presentations.

Don’t forget to set aside March 23 rd to the 26 th for the joint conference with NALS at the Silver Legacy in Reno. A pre-conference workshop with Jeff Lucas is being slated for Saturday with opening ceremonies on Sunday morning and the conference will wrap up on Tuesday. Our traditional bowling tournament will be on Saturday after the workshop. The Icebreaker Reception will be held on Sunday and on Monday evening, there will be a live auction with Lightning Williams during the dinner. You will not want to miss this so save the date.

In this news letter, you will find a request to respond to USGS in regards to shutting down RTCM data streams. Please review the list and make your voice heard.

Ron Nelms
CLSA President
URGENT: Real Time Data Streams May Be Lost
You may have been affected by USGS outages in Southern California, which are still not pushing RTCM data streams. These data streams are down due to server issues at USGS. During CSRC’s conversation with USGS, it has come to our attention that they will be updating their servers/software for all of their GPS stations in the near future.  USGS is considering shutting down all Northern and Southern California RTCM data streams through the new servers. They are under the impression that no one is using the RTCM data streams, since they have only received two emails about the station outages. We will send USGS a concerted response and plan to include the information from you.

Please review the list of USGS stations below. If you use any of these stations , please email [email protected] and [email protected] with the following information:

  1. List the USGS GPS station(s) that you utilize (see below).
  2. Briefly state the purpose of the USGS RTCM streams (especially for State, County, Local, Capital Improvement projects, etc.).
  3. How would it affect your ability to perform your required work without these RTCM data streams?
