Welcome to the Holistic Child Health Newsletter.
The goal of my holistic pediatric practice, and of this newsletter, is to inform and support parents to become more empowered as the primary health care providers for their children. Extending far beyond Western medicine's conventional treatments, holistic medicine and mindful parenting allow us to boost children's natural immunity, support their optimum health and wellness, safely heal any illnesses, and prevent disease-without dangerous side effects. Holistic medicine provides us with the tools to nurture the physical, emotional, social and spiritual health of your children.
Over the coming months and years, I intend to use this newsletter to address some of your concerns as parents, share information that you might want to add to your knowledge base, and inform you of important issues and current events that are happening in the news, and in your area.
Together we can heal the whole child. Naturally.

Pertussis Cases are Reportedly On the Rise - Why?
Dr Palevsky's Comments: The first article describes how pertussis cases are on the rise since 1976, but leaves out any mention of corresponding vaccination rates.
The second article describes how the vaccination rates remain high in this country, specifically mentioning the 95% vaccination rates for diphtheria, pertussis, & tetanus.
In summary, pertussis cases are increasing, vaccination rates for pertussis are 95%, and somehow the unvaccinated cases are responsible for this rise in cases of pertussis?
One hand does not seem to know what the other hand is doing......
At that time, pertussis vaccination rates were not as high as they are today, yet the number of cases of pertussis continued to increase even as the percentage of children vaccinated against pertussis, increased. One needs to be mindful of the fact that the number of cases of pertussis since 1976 may actually be even higher than what has been reported, because physicians may not have been testing for it, or believing that patients could have had clinical pertussis since a majority was already vaccinated.
In addition, pertussis illnesses would have been missed if people had the disease, but did not present with the classic whoop, and instead, merely presented with an upper respiratory illness and a mild cough. This is not out the realm of possibility with a pertussis illness.
In the 1995 MMWR CDC report listed above, http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/00038200.htm, of 10,989 patients for whom data about vaccination status were available, 6876 (63%) had received fewer than three doses. This means, however, that 37% of those patients who developed cases of pertussis had received 3 or MORE doses, and got pertussis, anyway. Two doses of pertussis have been found to be more than adequately protective, so it's not clear how many of the 6876 (63%) had received 2 doses, and may have been adequately protected, yet got pertussis anyway. Nonetheless, 37% of 10,989 patients developing pertussis, having received 3 or more doses of the whole cellular pertussis vaccine, is not a good coverage rate.
In the 1995 MMWR CDC report, of 3184 patients aged 7 months-4 years for whom vaccination status was known, 725 (23%) had received no doses, 714 (22%) had received one or two doses, and 1745 (55%) had received three or more doses. With 55% having received three or more doses, and two doses still being somewhat protective, this does not suggest good protection by the vaccine, either.
In the 1995 MMWR CDC report, from 1992 through the second quarter of 1994, among children 19-35 months, vaccination coverage with three or more doses of DPT or DT was 83% for 1992, 88% for 1993, 87% for the first quarter of 1994, and 90% for the second quarter of 1994. Vaccination coverage with four or more doses of DPT or DT was 59% in 1992, 72% in 1993, 67% in the first quarter of 1994, and 70% for the second quarter of 1994. At the time, we believed these were more than adequate vaccination rates, boasting how well we were doing to maintain high vaccination rates in the name of herd immunity.
At the time of the introduction of the acellular pertussis vaccine, it was only being used intermittently as a 4th or 5th DTaP vaccine in the series, for children who had already received the whole-cell pertussis vaccine (DTP) for the first 3 vaccines in the series, and did not become part of the full routine vaccination schedule starting at 2 months, until later in the 1990's/early in the 2000's. Thus, pertussis rates were increasing before the full-scale introduction of the acellular pertussis vaccine AND while pertussis vaccination rates were also increasing.
Perhaps, just perhaps, either the vaccine doesn't work, and/or, the pertussis bacteria have mutated, giving us new strains no longer covered by the vaccine, along with the probability that other organisms are leading to clinical presentations that are similar, but not exactly the same as, pertussis.........( http://www.cidd.psu.edu/research/synopses/acellular-vaccine-enhancement-b.-parapertussis). Even the Red Book, 2003 edition states, "pertussis immunity is not absolute and immunization may not prevent infection." |

NEW YORK CALL TO ACTION
From Autism Action Network:
A federal court in Brooklyn will hear oral arguments today (October 7th) in a case that may put in jeopardy every religious exemption from vaccine mandates in the State of New York. The court is hearing an appeal of a June decision in a case brought by the Check family of Staten Island. In brief, Dina Check attended pre-school for two years with a religious exemption in place. When Dina transferred to kindergarten her religious exemption was revoked by the New York City Departments of Health and Education. The lower court upheld the City's refusal to honor the existing exemption.
If the lower court's decision is upheld, all existing religious exemptions from vaccine mandates in New York State may be revoked on a whim of a school district employee. New York City, however, is enforcing an illegal quota, limiting exemptions to 1.2% of all students. Principals of schools are threatened by the city with fines if they exceed the quota. Religious exemptions for all residents of New York city are directly threatened.
 For people in NYC and NYC only, Mayor Bill de Blasio could stop this with a phone call. Please call 311 and ask for the Mayor's office, and politely let the staffer know that you want New York City to get out of our personal lives.
For everybody in New York State, please call your Assemblymember and State Senator and politely let them know that you want them to co-sponsor Assembly bill A6359 and Senate bill S3934 which would provide New Yorkers parents the final say into what is injected into our children's bodies.

In 19 States, where more than half of the American population live, parents may opt out for any reason they choose, these states include California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Vermont and more than a dozen others.
Most other rich countries in the world adhere to this standard including Canada, Japan, The United Kingdom, Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Israel, etc.
Fifteen states, including Connecticut, allow automatic exemptions when parents sign state provided forms.
Thirteen states, including New Jersey, allow automatic exemptions when parents submit a letter.
ONLY New York allows low-level public employees to force US citizens to defend their religious beliefs.
It is beyond time to stop this ongoing violation of our Constitutional rights that is unique to New York state.

Dr Palevsky's Comments: And, what are the fungicide levels in the children and adults after they consume these bananas in the United States? Often, as you can see from the picture in the article, the bananas are picked early, and not allowed to ripen on the vine. The majority of the nutrients develop in the bananas (and in any other fruit and vegetable, for that matter) during the time of ripening on the vine. So, what you get is a less-than-optimal nutritious food. But, don't fret, the banana distributors help you out with this by injecting a ripening agent into almost all non-organic bananas, (and maybe some of the organic bananas), before they are shipped to the United States for sale. If you can find local, organic produce, and eat more in line with what grows in season, you will probably be closer to buying safer foods. There certainly are some merits to this approach to living, especially the part about cutting out the processed flour products and sugars, adopting the primal sleep regimen, and getting the kids outside and playing more. Each month, Dr Palevsky will be answering a hot topic question....
"It is so overwhelming to be a mother. I tried with every cell in my body to have no medical interventions, but my vulnerability and lack of support let me to pitocin and an epidural. Now, as a mom of an almost 5 month old, I'm reading that my baby should not be on her back, I hold her too much etc. I agree with most of this but am very confused. My baby never showed signs of ever being happy on her tummy. And I feel like holding her is more important than leaving her screaming on the floor on her stomach. Please help me understand what is going on."
When babies are born exposed to epidural medications, and an augmentation of the birthing process with pitocin, whether via C-section or vaginally, their nervous systems have taken a pounding. Often, this pounding constricts and tenses the musculature in their head, neck, and spine. This is one of the main reasons babies cry a lot on their tummies. It's hurts too much to be in that position.
Thankfully, my colleagues in the fields of chiropractic, osteopathy, and cranial sacral therapy, can assist these babies into having much more flexible and relaxed nervous systems, making them much more able to tolerate positioning on their tummies......

Dr. Palevsky is a board certified pediatrician who utilizes a holistic approach in his work with children and families.
Dr. Palevsky received his medical degree from the NYU School of Medicine in 1987, completed a 3-year pediatric residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and enrolled in a 1-year fellowship training program in the out-patient department at Bellevue Hospital/NYU School of Medicine.
Since 1991, his clinical experience has included working in pediatric emergency medicine at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in the Bronx, NY, serving as the Chief of the Pediatric Acute Care Unit at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC, and working in in-patient and out-patient pediatric medicine, neonatal intensive care medicine, and newborn and delivery room medicine.
Dr. Palevsky has also worked in a conventional, holistic and integrative pediatric practice at the NYC Beth Israel Center for Health & Healing- an integrative and complementary care medical facility.
Currently, he runs his own holistic pediatric practice in Northport, NY and Manhattan. Dr. Palevsky teaches holistic integrative pediatric & adolescent medicine to parents, and medical and allied health professionals, both nationally & internationally.
Dr. Palevsky is a former Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Past-President of the American Holistic Medical Association, and a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABIHM).
