8 Ways We Can Help You In the
Upcoming School Year
girl_with_book_gray.jpg
Confused about the upcoming school year? OVL can help! Introducing 6 new learning databases to assist you. Plus more.
We have added new tools for teaching, learning and research.

  1. Opposing Viewpoints: Opposing Viewpoints in Context is a resource that brings together academic articles, audio, videos, opinion essays and primary sources about contemporary controversies and hot topics. Whether you need a balanced view or support for your position, Opposing Viewpoints is the first place to go when you're researching a controversial or contentious issue.
  2. National Geographic Virtual Library: From its founding in 1888, the National Geographic Society has grown into an organization synonymous with exploration, photography, maps, and rethinking the world as we know it. From the iconic National Geographic magazine to the popular National Geographic Traveler and National Geographic History magazines, there’s simply no substitute for the depth and quality National Geographic Virtual Library will bring to OVL's patrons.
  3. Gale In Context: Elementary: Delivers trusted, age-appropriate digital content. Through newspaper and magazine articles, videos, images, and graphics, elementary students can learn about everything from animals and outer space to famous artists and favorite athletes. The database is visual and intuitive, and rewards students’ efforts by developing comprehension and research skills to prepare them for middle school—and a lifetime of learning.
  4. Gale In Context: Middle School: As a middle schooler, research can be challenging, right? You’re not a research guru just yet, and random, online searches can lead you to unreliable content. Thankfully, Gale In Context: Middle School integrates citable content from magazines, newspapers, videos, and primary sources into an easy-to-navigate database developed with you in mind. Dive into science, social studies, history, literature, and more from National Geographic, Scholastic, NPR, and NASA.
  5. Gale In Context: High School: When you have a paper, project, or presentation to complete, the hardest part is figuring out where to start. Gale In Context: High School simplifies your search for information by bringing together hundreds of thousands of images, videos, and audio selections into one easy-to-use database. While online browsers can serve up unreliable or incomplete results, this database lets you explore vetted primary sources, biographies, critical essays, and other materials in many formats — giving you deeper context to high-interest topics.
  6. Udemy: Udemy's mission is to improve lives through learning. Over 4000 online video courses feature an extensive, multi-language library, which includes thousands of courses taught by expert instructors. You can take courses across a wide range of categories, some of which include: business & entrepreneurship, programming, academics, the arts, health & fitness, language, music and much more!
  7. In the Library: We have many rooms that offer a safe space for study and work time. Seating is arranged to accommodate physical distancing requirements. We have wifi and available computers plus, we are open 7 days a week.
  8. Meet Nina Hoey, our newest staff member. In addition to performing circulation services, she will be involved with helping OVL fulfill its vision of bringing more educational support to families and students as they navigate the new paths various schools and educational institutions are taking to resume classes in the fall.

We are adding resources and space to assist parents, home-schoolers and caregivers adjust and help educate in K-12.

Introduction to SoulCollage®
Workshop -- Online
Kit Irwin, a SoulCollage® facilitator, will lead you through exercises and explain a little bit of the philosophy behind SoulCollage®. Due to these turbulent times, there is a suggested $20 fee for the workshop but please pay only as much as you can afford.
Materials you should have ready to use for the workshop:
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Card backings – these are 5 X 8” mat boards that you will collage on top of. If you don’t have mat board, you can cut up a cereal box, use watercolor paper, or even cut up file folders (though these might feel flimsy).
  • Images to use for collage. These can be from magazines, books, photos, printed images, calendars. Don’t forget junk mail. You can even use something you’ve drawn. The images should include ones of people, animals, and ones that are large enough to use as a background.
The class will be held on Zoom. A link and password will be sent out the day before the workshop.
