Homecoming Weekend and Post College Assembly: September 30 - October 2
The College of Dentistry's Homecoming Weekend and Post College Assembly (PCA) events will take place September 30 through October 2. Save the dates for a weekend of CE presentations and scarlet and gray celebrations!
Friday, September 30 - PCA: This year's continuing education event features speakers on an array of topics, including perioperative dentistry; replacing missing teeth in adolescent patients; caring for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder; and protecting tooth integrity with conservative dentistry.
Friday, September 30 - Class of 1972, 50th Reunion Luncheon: Members of the Class of 1972 and one guest are invited to a reunion luncheon in the atrium of the new Postle Hall expansion. Join us for this event that will reconnect you with friends and former classmates! Learn more and register online.
Saturday, October 1 - Family Friendly Buckeye Tailgate: Our family-friendly Buckeye Tailgate will be held in the Postle Hall courtyard prior to the football game. Let's root for the home team as Ohio State's Buckeyes battle Rutgers' Scarlet Knights! Get more details about Homecoming Weekend events.

White Coat Ceremony Welcomes New DDS and DHY Students
The College of Dentistry welcomed its new dental hygiene and dental students at the White Coat Ceremony held August 22.
Nearly a thousand friends and family members attended the event at the Mershon Auditorium. Speakers included Dean Carroll Ann Trotman; Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Darryl Hamamoto; Dental Alumni Society President Jeffrey Kirian; Ohio Dental Hygienists' Association President Shannon Sweeney; and Ohio Dental Association President Thomas Kelly.
The annual event marks the beginning of the professional educational experience of the dental hygiene Class of 2024 and the dental Class of 2026. This year's DDS class includes 120 students: 104 from Ohio and 16 from out-of-state. The dental hygiene class has 32 students; 31 from Ohio and 1 from out-of-state.
Welcoming the new students and their guests, Dean Trotman said, "This White Coat Ceremony is the first step on your journey to becoming dental professionals. Other dental schools across the country would have welcomed you, but we're so glad you chose us -- THE Ohio State University College of Dentistry -- for your dental education. I welcome you all as the newest members of our college community, and I look forward to the years we will spend together!"

Special Lecture: NIDCR Deputy Director, Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, DDS, PhD, Presents "Oral Health for All: Oral Health in America"
Dr. Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), will discuss a 2021 report commissioned by the U.S. Surgeon General, titled “Oral Health in America.” It is only the second comprehensive document on this subject in more than 20 years.
Dr. Webster-Cyriaque will present the report’s recommendations for improving oral health in America, including the importance of “understanding the deep disparities in the experience of disease by different population groups and the systemic inequities in access to care that inevitably accompany those disparities.”

Gabriela Zimmer, DDS, MS, is Assistant Professor-Clinical
On August 1, Dr. Gabriela Zimmer joined the college as an Assistant Professor-Clinical in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry. Her education includes a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Dentistry. She also completed a Master of Science degree and a certificate in advanced prosthodontics from Ohio State's College of Dentistry. Following that, she earned a certificate in maxillofacial prosthetics and dental oncology at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Zimmer's professional experience includes serving as a general dentist and providing support for a number of the college's preclinical dental courses, such as "operative dentistry for indirect partial restorations," and "diagnosis and treatment planning procedures for rehabilitating complex prosthodontics patients."
As a faculty member, Dr. Zimmer fulfills didactic, preclinical, and clinical teaching responsibilities for the division, as well as working to enhance curriculum development to ensure the highest quality of educational experiences for students.

Simran Sarao, BMSc, DDS, is Instructor-Practice
Dr. Simran Sarao joined the college on August 15 as an Instructor-Practice and an intern in the Division of Endodontics. She received her Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery degrees from the University of Alberta School of Dentistry in Canada.
Dr. Sarao's most recent publications and research focus on risk factors related to root perforations and injuries that result in dental trauma. Her responsibilities in the college include supporting the predoctoral endodontics clinic and providing patient care in the Dental Emergency Clinic.

Ms. Shelli Shoemaker, BS, MS, is Senior Clinical Health and Safety Officer
On August 29, Ms. Shelli Shoemaker joined the college as the Senior Clinical Health and Safety Officer. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University, as well as a Master of Science degree in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management with a graduate certificate in Homeland Security from Eastern Kentucky University.
Prior to joining the college, Ms. Shoemaker served as a facilities safety manager at Ohio State. Her other professional experience includes the roles of corporate safety specialist, safety and environmental specialist, field safety specialist, and safety manager for the FedEx Corporation. She is also a qualified outreach trainer for the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Her responsibilities include managing the college's health and safety program; conducting clinic safety and infection prevention reviews; implementing process improvements; managing the college’s health and safety requirements and compliance training; and serving as the point person for providing a safe environment for patients, students, employees, and guests.

Annual Staff Tailgate: Tuesday, September 13
The DSDC - Dentistry Staff Development Committee - is hosting the college's annual staff tailgate that offers employees a chance to connect, root for the home team, and enjoy food and refreshments over the lunch hour. The celebration will include sodas, hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, and all the trimmings. Come along and show your OSU spirit as we root for the Buckeyes to beat Toledo!
