From Dean Carroll Ann Trotman
As you see in the photo above, our students have been enjoying the spring-like weather we’ve had lately – and so have the rest of us! Spring is a season when the level of activity in the college goes even higher, and many events are focused on our students. This includes the awarding of several important scholarships.
I’ll mention a few. The Veler, Masonbrink, and Knabe scholarships were created by our generous alumni and friends. With their support, we are helping to address the high cost of dental education. Other scholarships include awards from the American Dental Education Association that were given to two dental hygiene students – one is a senior in the baccalaureate program and the other is a graduate student. I congratulate all of these outstanding students whose hard work and excellence have been recognized.
Kudos to students and faculty who won prizes at the Research Day competition last month. Several awards were given at that event -- all for projects that have an impact on our profession.
We also showcase the work of Dr. Sarah Peters, assistant professor in the Division of Biosciences, whose dental pulp research is funded by the National Institutes of Health - National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research. You will enjoy learning about her discoveries related to dentin and the ways it changes with gender and age.
Other highlights include an article about Dr. Kyulim Lee, a pediatric dentistry resident who is collaborating on a research project that is funded by Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and the Abigail Wexner Research Institute. This soon-to-be-alumna will join the dental team at NCH after graduation.
Also, we are hosting a special, upcoming presentation for Women’s History Month. Dr. Khlea Sumani, a practicing dentist and forensic odontologist, will talk about her experiences as a clinician in the world of forensic dentistry.
The college -- and everyone in it -- is busy at all times while we work to advance our goals, but spring is a season of “busy-ness” that moves us closer to some of the greatest achievements, such as convocation and graduation. I hope you enjoy reading about what we’ve accomplished so far, and stay tuned for more good news next month!

Nathaniel Wilhelm Receives Veler Scholarship
A native of Defiance, Ohio, and a D1 student in the College of Dentistry, Mr. Nathaniel Wilhelm was recently selected as this year's recipient of the Richard C. Veler, DDS, and Betty G. Veler Dental Scholarship. Chosen for his outstanding academic merit, demonstrated interest in professional service, and exceptional character, Mr. Wilhelm will receive an annual, renewable award of $50,000 for in-state tuition throughout his time in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program.
The Veler Scholarship was created in 2009 with a gift from the estate of the late Dr. Richard C. Veler, a College of Dentistry alumnus from the Class of 1946, and his wife, Betty Veler, to support scholarships for the college's dental students.

Dental Hygiene Students Receive ADEA Scholarships
Ms. Riley Sines (top photo) and Ms. Johanna Owen are dental hygiene students who recently received scholarships from the American Dental Education Association (ADEA).
Ms. Sines is the recipient of the 2023 ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship that is given to dental hygiene students who are pursuing allied dental education. She is a senior in the Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) program. Ms. Owen received the 2023 ADEA/Crest Oral-B Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers. She is a second-year student in the Master's in Dental Hygiene (MDH) program that prepares dental hygienists for positions as educators, researchers, and leaders.

Pediatric Dentistry Resident, Kyulim Lee, DMD, Conducts Oral Microbiome Research
Dr. Kyulim Lee is a resident in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and a researcher who studies the oral microbiome and its impact on health. Her current project titled "Characterization of the oral microbiome in patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants," has received a $10,000 grant from Ohio State's Clinical and Translational Intramural Funding Program and the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Lee's education includes a BS degree, DMD degree, and a PhD in microbiology and immunology from the University of Florida at Gainesville. Her doctoral studies on the intermicrobial interactions that shape the oral environment led to a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. Those experiences were followed by her enrollment in the college's pediatric dentistry residency program.
Working under the mentorship of Dr. Ann Griffen, Interim Chair of the Division of Biosciences, and Dr. Janice Townsend, Chair of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at Nationwide Children's Hospital, Dr. Lee is collaborating with the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Team to study the oral microbiome in patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplants. After completing her residency in June, she will join the dental team at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Sarah Peters, PhD, Conducts Research and Uncovers New Evidence Related to Dentin Changes
Dr. Sarah Peters joined the college in 2020 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Biosciences. Prior to that, she had served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Cell, Developmental, and Integrative Biology in the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She brought with her a K99/R00 grant of $981,028 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) that funds her dental pulp research. The project is titled “Mechanisms regulating afferent innervation in the dental pulp,” and it has received supplemental (NIH) funding for a total award of $1,048,410.
Dr. Peters’ main project investigates the paracrine signals secreted by dental pulp stem cells and odontoblasts that regulate tooth innervation during development, and whether or not this also regulates reactionary dentinogenesis following dentin injury. Part of reactionary dentinogenesis relies on the extracellular matrix factors stored in the dentin that can be released by bacterial acid secretions and dental procedures. Dr. Peters has uncovered new evidence that the dentin proteome changes with age and differs between sexes. She is currently working on two grant applications to support investigations of specific factors, including genetics, age, and sex, that promote dentinogenesis. The hope is that such knowledge will lead to new restorative and endodontic treatments.
The value of Dr. Peters’ research is demonstrated in part by her scholarly publications in well-respected journals with high impact factors, including Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology; Neural Regeneration Research; and Genes. Her accomplishments have also been recognized by her college peers who presented her with the 2022 Stazen Junior Faculty Award that honors a faculty member who has “demonstrated exceptional promise in research."
