MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Dear Colleagues:
As I prepare for this holiday season and the start of the New Year, I continue looking for ways to let those around me know how much their efforts make a difference – every day. This is not a difficult task. As a college that educates students, conducts research, and provides care for patients, we have many responsibilities. We could not meet our obligations as we do without everyone pitching in, giving it their best effort, and finding new and improved ways to accomplish our goals.
One very real example is “Postle Reimagined,” developed to help us enhance coverage that supports every aspect of our students’ clinical progress and clinic efficiencies. Although it will be a temporary change until we overcome challenges as a result of COVID-19 and the need for additional faculty, planning these enhancements has taken a great deal of hard work by our faculty, staff, and students, and we look forward to its implementation in the New Year.
Also, I would like to highlight individual achievements seen in this newsletter: Drs. Pegah Khosravi-Kamrani and Seeun Mok who received University Fellowships; dental hygiene seniors Ranya Bousfiha, Hailee Hartmann, Faith Holder, Victoria Lohr, Yasmin Mahammad, and Hanan Omar who won Table Clinic awards; Dr. Mark Hochberg's ABOMP diplomate status; Dr. Brandon Yeager's Tylman research award; and Drs. Amini, Bean, and Townsend who contributed to an innovative and award-winning program. It is all good news!
Thank you for helping to make The Ohio State University College of Dentistry a place that is truly special.
I wish you all the best for the holiday season!
Sincerely,
Dean Carroll Ann Trotman

Gartner Innovation Award Given to Collaborative "MPATHI" Project
With the goal of creating innovations that enhance the dental care provided for patients, three faculty members contributed to a project that recently won a Gartner Eye on Innovation Award for Healthcare and Life Sciences for the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH). Those faculty are Homa Amini, DDS, MS, MPH, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry; Canise Bean, DMD, MPH, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry and Director of Community Education; and Janice Townsend, DDS, MS, Chief of Pediatric Dentistry at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) and Chair of the college's Division of Pediatric Dentistry.
Working with other healthcare professionals at Ohio State and NCH, Drs. Amini, Bean, and Townsend contributed to the development of a project called MPATHI -- also known as "Making Professionals Able THrough Immersion." This virtual reality-based program helps train dental professionals to be more empathetic by exposing them to "virtual" situations in which they provide simulated dental care for [virtual] patients who struggle with financial challenges, food insecurity, limited health literacy, and language barriers.
The program was developed by a team that included Ohio State's Colleges of Dentistry and Medicine; Nationwide Children's Hospital and its Department of Pediatric Dentistry; and the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
