MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear Colleagues:

As I reported a few months ago, the completion of our new building project has been delayed due to the many complications that came along with the COVID-19 pandemic. These construction-related setbacks impacted different parts of the building in different ways, resulting in some areas being finished before others. To take advantage of each new component of the building as it was completed and ready for use, we decided on a “phased opening" of the building.

In early January, we started using the new central sterilization facility on the ground floor. Near the end of the month, we opened the Atrium, a two-story reception area in the center of the building that provides additional “safe space” for students, staff, and faculty to maintain social distancing during mealtimes. And in mid-April, the Ohio State Dental Faculty Practice moved into its new clinic.

Our most recent opening -- and one that has gotten quite a bit of attention -- was on May 17th, when the Postle Café made its long-awaited debut. Located adjacent to the Atrium, it offers convenient access to refreshments for everyone in the college. The university’s Office of Student Life designed, built, and operates the café. It offers a long list of beverages, snacks, and sandwiches that are available for breakfast and lunch. Although it looks like any other eatery you might see on campus, it’s unique for our college community because we have never had our own café before.

After many months of being separated in the classrooms, clinics, and even outdoors, I have been so pleased to see our students, staff, and faculty lining up, placing orders, and getting served in the cafe. Some stay in the Atrium to enjoy their special treats, while others head back to their workplace. But in either case, the café is one of the few places in Postle Hall where everyone can gather. Although we are all still wearing masks and maintaining a six-foot distance, this is truly a common space for our entire community.

My hope is that this part of the new Postle Hall will continue to create an environment for our students, staff, and faculty to interact, share ideas, and help support one another as we continue to work through these challenging times. How fortunate that as we begin the process of “coming back together” we have a place that welcomes us all!
