How Prostaglandins Effect Your Body

Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D.

Prostaglandins are hormone-like substances derived from fats such as Omega-3 and Omega-6. Good fats create prostaglandins that are good for the body. These are called series 1-prostaglandins. They reduce the stickiness of blood, control cholesterol levels, improve immune function, maintain fluid balance, and reduce inflammation. Series 1-prostaglandins are derived through Omega-3 from fish, nuts, and seeds. The highest concentrations of Omega-3 can be found in mackerel and cold-water fish like trout and salmon. Vegan sources of omega-3 are flax, walnuts, seaweed and algae.
