Week of November 26-30, 2018
"Thanksgiving isn't just a day. It's a way we can live our lives every day." Mayer
Dear Southern Door Community,

At this special time of year, we reflect on our many blessings as a school community. We are thankful for:
 . . .our students whose personal energies and talents remind us daily of what is important and why we, as educators are here;
 . . .our parents who continue to share their most valuable possession with us and partner with us in their child's education;
 . . .our teachers, associates, bus drivers, secretaries, nursing staff & therapists, food service, custodians, administrators, and Board of Education who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart;
 . . .our volunteers who contribute so much in their time, talents, and treasure to our school; and
 . . .our community who supports so many educational needs here at Southern Door.
Every day, we see dedicated and tireless individuals going above and beyond to make sure that great things happen in our school and “make a difference” in the lives of our community’s children and their education, safety, and well-being. I would like to wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday break and thank you for Together We Are Eagle Strong!

Elementary School Welcomes New Therapy Dog Teams
Research has shown that students will benefit in a variety of ways from the use of a therapy dog. Dogs have been documented as an effective tool in improving reading fluency, as children who may not want to read aloud to peers will often curl up with a dog and read willingly. Students who are more reluctant to open up to adults are often more willing to share concerns when the comfort of a dog is present.

Our school is working with certified volunteer therapy dog teams. Students may read with dogs in their classrooms or meet individually with the counselor to check-in and see how school is going. In the months ahead, you may see dog teams greeting students in the morning, walking around the school, or helping to support students. As a learning community, we are excited about the potential for student growth that these therapy dog teams will bring. Please see this link for additional information on the benefits of therapy dogs in the classroom.
