“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters
compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within us out into the world, miracles happen.”

Dear Southern Door Community
The above quote brings to mind the great things that can happen when our students feel engaged and empowered. SDHS Junior, Delilah Rose (pictured above), our student correspondent with Door County Daily News, has done a fantastic job reporting on school events, including her last two interviews on the November referendums. Go to this
link
for her latest interview with Mark Logan.
In talking with Delilah, I learned that she is leading the effort to bring back our high school newspaper. Here’s what she shared with me:
This is a student-run online newspaper that is the voice for our SD student body. The Eagle Pride focuses on all media that can involve a variety of students with different interests. Being an online paper, it not only focuses on being immediate but also nature-friendly. While looking good on student resumes, this paper is a great opportunity for improving student skills. Delilah's passion lies in journalism, and speaking her mind is of upmost importance to her. She feels that with this paper, students who feel the same can put their interests to action. She is invested in this paper’s success and hopes that by the time she graduates in 2020, this paper will continue to run for years to come.
We have so many individual stories of students and staff that celebrate our individual and collective talents and what we can accomplish in our district.
Together We Are Eagle Strong!
Patti

SD BIG/LITTLE SISTERS MATCH OF THE MONTH
-
Matched since 2015, Regan and Abigail like to spend their time together at Southern Door talking, going to the gym and coloring. For Abigail, being matched with Regan has given her not only a friend to talk to and have fun with, but it's also given her a sneak peak into what's possible for her in high school. "There’s no better feeling than spending time with a student and watching them grow up," says Regan. Read more at this

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR ELEMENTARY STEAM CLASSES -
STEAM is a new class for all in grades K-5. Students visit the STEAM makerspace room once a week for 60 minutes. They participate in challenges that integrate science, technology, engineering, art - agriscience, and math. STEAM encourages children to work as a team and develop their skills in collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. The class welcomes families, friends, and community to look for items around your house (no need to buy!) which will help grow the resources needed for student projects. Go to this
link
to see a full list of items the students could use.

Hanging up in the hallway near the cafeteria, you will find a large pair of wings created by grades K-5. This was inspired by the artist Kelsey Montague who draws wings on walls in cities all around the world. Each student created a unique feather and included images and words of "what lifts them" when they feel sad, tired or cranky. You are invited to take your picture standing in front of the wings and sharing
“What Lifts You SD Eagles”
with family and friends.
