This past Saturday, we opened up a new myHometown neighborhood in Sharon Park. If you are unfamiliar with the initiative, myHometown is a proven program for strengthening neighborhoods through service, learning, and love.
The opening of Sharon Park is another step forward in our ongoing work to revitalize Orem’s neighborhoods and keep us on track as Family City USA.
The myHometown is more than just projects and programs. It is about people. Neighbors helping neighbors. Families learning together. Participants are developing new skills like playing the piano, sewing, cooking, budgeting, and so much more. There are also large-scale service projects where hundreds of residents flood the area to clean up, fix up, and level up the neighborhood.
Over in the Geneva Heights neighborhood, we have seen myHometown in action for a year now, and the results have been exactly what we hoped for: stronger connections, greater trust, and a community that feels like family. Programs like myHometown work because they are built on the timeless values that are the anchor of any great community: service, learning, and love.
This effort is part of a larger commitment of the Mayor and City Council to revitalizing our neighborhoods. Other efforts include improving and expanding city events such as the Orem Farmers Market, where thousands of residents come together each week to share in the bounty of our community. The more opportunities we have for service and connection, the stronger we will be as a community.
You do not have to live in a myHometown neighborhood to get the same results where you live. Every act of service in your neighborhood makes Orem better.
