Support Our Work!

Hello, and I hope you are doing well! It is an honor and a pleasure to reach out to Dovetail’s supporters. Thank you for all you do to enable our success and partnership. Carrying forward what we learn from season to season, year to year, and from practitioner to practitioner is essential to ensuring our work isn’t alone and our progress isn’t lost.

The Dovetail team carries three guiding principles in the ways we start and continue our work. One, we go local. We may not be able to address everything, everywhere, all at once - but we can always do work in our backyards, with our neighbors, and where our roots run deep. Two, we collaborate. We may not have all the answers, but we know that others will have more to add to ours and together we’ll go further. Three, we carry forward the work of those before us and create space for those who will do their work after us. The goal has never been to finish but to sustain and nurture.

I invite you to renew your support of Dovetail Partners via an online donation or by mail with this printable form. If you wish to contribute via stocks, bonds, or securities, you can find instructions here. Please reach out to me directly as you wish: 612-414-8041, katie@dovetailinc.org. Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Kathryn Fernholz

“Raise a glass; thank a tree!”

By: Kathleen Preece

Recently Dovetail joined hands and hearts to assist in reforesting fire-devastated northeastern Minnesota, while also sharing the message of Forest to Tap (F2T), a program promoting the link between good water and sustainable forestry. We visited the communities recently impacted by the Brimson Complex wildfires in Saint Louis County and handed out seedlings of hope.

The 9th American Forest Congress was held from July 15-18, 2025 in Washington, D.C. Dovetail celebrates the leadership and impact of the Congress in recognizing the forest-based values that strengthen communities, economies, and ecosystems. In advance of the Congress, Dovetail Partners released our priorities to inform the finalizing of the Principles and Resolutions at the event. We are pleased to see these priorities reflected in the final Principles and Resolutions of the 9th American Forest Congress.

RX Field Trip Event Recap

By: Teresa Floberg

The field trip toured three unique sites in the Ely area (both public and private land) where prescribed fire was planned and implemented. Our forests are fire dependent and need periodic low intensity fire to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and promote a balanced ecosystem. Prescribed fire is an important part of forest management and a beneficial means of achieving cross-cultural stewardship objectives. Participants learned from fire professionals and educators about the role fire plays in our forest on this field trip!

The picture attached is a unit that is part of a Superior National Forest fuels treatment site. Piles were cut and burned in 2017, with a first underburn 2017 and a second burn in 2024. The adjacent land (pictured on the left side of the photo) offers the contrast of an untreated forest, thick with dead standing and down balsam. The federal property (right side of the photo) demonstrates what a healthy, open forest habitat looks like after low intensity fire has been introduced. The Forest Service treatments will help reduce the chances of a wildfire moving quickly out of the wilderness and impacting the Wildland Urban Interface adjacent to federal land.

Derecho challenges Northwood’s spirits

By: Kathleen Preece

Originally published in the Minnesota Women’s Woodland Network July 2025 Newsletter.

“Derecho.” The word sounds like it should be describing a summer drink; perhaps crushed ice blended with lime and pineapple and blended with coconut milk for taste; sipped while overlooking your wooded landscape?

Regrettably, a derecho is not a summer refreshment. Miraculously, no one was killed in Bemidji from the force of the storm itself, but damage to the area was extensive.
