The Outlook | September 2024

A trusted source of environmental information

Each year, I write a letter to thank you for your past support, share a few current highlights from the Dovetail team, and invite your continued partnership in our mission. I’d also like to tell you something about how we work and why your donation is so crucial. While visiting our website or opening our monthly e-newsletter, you may have noticed something that sets us apart: our reports and articles are free to read and share. Over the years, I’ve been asked about why we do this, and I can tell you that it is because we think high quality information should be readily available and generously shared.

Your support gives us the latitude to go where we're needed most and to take on new projects that will make a positive impact. In August 2024, the Dovetail team gathered in Northern Minnesota for a retreat, strategic planning opportunity, and to engage in the resiliency of the local landscape by helping improve access within a local community trail (see image above). Your belief in and engagement with Dovetail Partners pushes us to keep producing the kind of work you’ve come to expect from our team. Thank you for believing in Dovetail Partners, for being part of this community, and for continuing to make this possible!

ROWSC Announces Revised Technical Requirements, Opens Public Comment Period

The Right-of-Way Stewardship Council (ROWSC) is pleased to announce the completion of a year long process to review the ROW Steward Technical Requirements for Accreditation, and the opening of a 6-week public comment period for feedback on the proposed changes. Goals for this revision included reducing redundancy across principles, criteria, and indicators; aligning the requirements with recent science and IVM trends, applicable regulations, and standards, and including emerging issues like updates to environmental and social contracts.

To support the public comment period, a document summarizing high level changes and a clean version of the revised standards are available. Interested parties can submit comments at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ROWSCpubliccomment

Biochar Field Day

The Biochar Field Day in August was a success! Participants gathered to learn about the benefits of biochar for soil health and sustainability, compared different equipment and learned how to create biochar using a flame-capped kiln. At the end of the demonstration each participant took home their own bucket of biochar! Click here to learn more about biochar.

Forest to Tap attended the Harvest Moon Brew Festival

The Forest to Tap (F2T) program recently attended the Harvest Moon Brew Festival in Aitkin, MN. F2T is a collaborative program supported by Dovetail and other natural resource interests that highlights the importance of sustainable forestry in creating clean water (and great beer!). At the event, F2T representatives spoke to visitors about how healthy forests support healthy watersheds and handed out F2T coasters and flyers. Keep an eye out for Forest to Tap at more Minnesota brew fests in 2025!

Trees & Utilities Podcast

Kathryn Fernholz of Dovetail Partners, Inc. joined Tejpal Singh & Philip M. Charlton, Ph.D. on Trees & Lines: A Utility Vegetation Management Podcast, where she talked about how wildfire risk mitigation requires behavioral change and steadfast buy-in across communities to be effective. In addition to wildfire risk mitigation, the conversation also explored Dovetail’s work with the Right-of-Way Stewardship Council, how utility forestry has evolved through the years, and sustainability.

Forest Landowner Foundation Webinar

Dovetail's president, Kathryn Fernholz, spoke on a webinar titled, "US Private Forest Sustainability in the 21st Century - Beyond Third-Party Certification" for the Forest Landowner Foundation. The webinar shared insights and findings from a recent report addressing sustainability of private forest lands in the US prepared by Dovetail Partners with support from the Forest Landowners Foundation and the USDA Forest Service.
