12 Great Days at the

Pima County Fair

Pima County 4-H’s end-of-year competitions returned with a bang as the Pima County Fair resumed after a two-year pandemic hiatus. This year’s competitions spanned 12 days and ended with two days of high energy public auctions presented by the Pima County Junior Livestock Sales Inc. The auctioned livestock hit multiple record-breaking prices this year; a steer went for $41 a pound, more than breaking the previous record, and a meat pen of rabbits went for $6,200 dollars as compared to the previous record of $2,300. These record-breaking individual lots helped the large stock auction raise over 1.1 million dollars and the small stock auction raise $135,000 dollars for local 4-H youth with market-animal projects. These funds go straight back into the youth’s pockets to help fund their next year’s projects and save for their college funds. Aside from the auction proceeds, youth were awarded for their efforts with ribbons provided by the Pima County Fairgrounds, buckles provided with funding raised by local businesses and donated by individuals, and various plaques and engraved items created in-house by 4-H youth and families at the Pima County 4-H FAB LAB. We look forward to another amazing year in 2022, and we hope youth enjoy their summer at Tucson Village Farm’s summer camps and other activities outside of their clubs. See you all again in the Fall!

Pima County Extension Releases 2021 Annual Report

It is with great pleasure that I share the UArizona Pima County Cooperative Extension Annual Report for 2021. The annual report describes each program within our three pillars: Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, and Family, Consumer, and Health Sciences. Through the report, you will meet the faculty and staff comprising each program team, gain insight into our advisory boards, and learn about our organizational structure and finances. In 2021, our facilities grew and improved! Our 4-H program launched a high-tech Fabrication Lab and at Tucson Village Farm, new outbuildings, patios, and garden beds enhanced programming. Improved garden signage was installed at our Green Valley location and a wonderful mural was designed and painted in collaboration with the community at The Garden Kitchen in South Tucson.

Our goal at Pima County Cooperative Extension is to provide practical information and education to help people make their lives better. In 2021, we had an unprecedented online reach and then transitioned to in-person programming. Over 350 youth showcased their animals and projects at the 2021 County Fair and 19 weeks of youth camps enriched children’s lives. In addition, we taught over 500 classes, trainings, and activities to help people build gardening, water conservation, parenting, and nutrition skills. We could not have accomplished so much without our many volunteers, advisory boards, and community partners. I invite you to learn about our organization and our diverse programming through this report and to join us for more exceptional experiences in the coming year.

COVID vaccine.jpg

Covid Vaccination Rates Grow in South Tucson

In January of 2022, the number of adults fully vaccinated in South Tucson had stagnated at under 50%, but with continued efforts, as of March 2022, the City of South Tucson saw an increased vaccination rate to approximately 61%. To decrease COVID-19 in areas with low vaccine rates, The Garden Kitchen has been working closely with a variety of community and organizational partners including Portable Practical Educational Preparation, Pima County Health Department’s Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health program, Avenidas Inc., and the City of South Tucson. Through leading the Healthy South Tucson Coalition, The Garden Kitchen provides a space for these groups to gather and combine efforts, providing more opportunities for testing and vaccination in traditionally underserved spaces. Upcoming testing and vaccine events will have customized outreach efforts and additional health services, making the event a one-stop shop for many families seeking health information and care. An important aspect of this programming is the spread of information to those that have questions about the vaccine for themselves or their family members and those that are pregnant or considering pregnanc. In order to dispel misinformation, community residents’ involvement in the design and distribution of messaging is being prioritized.

To find more information on vaccination, visit the Pima County Health Department and for more information on a variety of other resources, visit The Garden Kitchen.

Positive Tools for Parenting Teens

Does seeing eye-to-eye with teens sometimes seem impossible? Parents in the online Positive Discipline for Teens workshop offered by the Family Engagement Program are surprised at their ability to engage in conversation and compromise with their teens. Based on the work of social psychologist Alfred Adler, the Positive Discipline workshops promote the belief that children behave better when they experience a sense of belonging. Activities provide an opportunity for parents to see the world through their child’s eyes – to understand how they feel challenged and why they act the way they do. After attending classes, parents said they were better able to listen to their children and hear them out. By giving their teen a voice, they found that conversations were more productive and often resulted in win-win situations. The "two-lists activity",  in particular, helps parents to use conflict to build the skills they would like their children to have as adults – such as empathy, hard work, and honesty. With the future in mind, parents were able to see their teens as young adults and not small children. Mutual respect can affect the entire family dynamic resulting in more confident teens and a more positive relationship with their parents.

MG Plant Sale and

Garden Tours are a Hit!

“Wow! I can’t believe it!”. That was the refrain that sounded across the Master Gardeners’ (MG) domain after two of our most successful fundraisers in the 38-year history of the Pima Master Gardener program. Over the course of two Saturdays, we engaged with over 2,000 of our supporters, with the plant sale clocking in at 950+ patrons, and the Home Garden Tour bringing in +1100 more garden enthusiasts. For reference, in previous years we might have seen half those numbers in attendance. So how did the program pull off record-breaking attendance to these events? As usual, the answer is the steadfast dedication of Master Gardener volunteers. They hustled, they networked, and they got creative. From television appearances on the local news to articles in local newspapers and outlets, and through our deep connections with our nursery partners, this community rallied in the name of gardening educational opportunities, and they delivered! A bit thank you to everyone for their support, including Cooperative Extension staff, the community that joined us for these special events, and especially our beloved Master Gardeners – without all of you, none of this would be possible.

Healing with Food

Tucson Village Farm (TVF) was honored to host Dr. Andrew Weil at the Farm on April 30th for an evening of Healing With Food, a fundraising dinner to support TVF’s 4-H youth development programming. Farm-fresh dishes were inspired by Dr. Weil’s cookbook True Food and prepared by TVF’s very own Chef Becky Yim and a host of 4-H Healthy Living Ambassador teens, AmeriCorps members, TVF staff, and community volunteers. Dr. Weil spoke to the 120 guests between courses, outlining his food pyramid, highlighting the nutritional benefits of each of the selected courses, and reinforcing TVF’s mission to get kids to eat more fruits and vegetables.

TVF has been partnering with Dr. Weil’s Center for Integrative Medicine here at UArizona for several years through the IMER (Integrative Medicine Elective Rotation) program. Each fall and spring 4-H Assistant Agent Elizabeth Sparks and TVF Founder Leza Carter teach applied nutrition to fourth-year medical students and medical residents enrolled in the IMER program. The IMER partnership evolved from the innovative TVF program FARMacy: A Prescription for a Healthier Community. Our goal is to teach doctors nutrition-based healthy living and disease prevention strategies that they can pass on to their patients

Food Safety for Summer

As food heats up with rising summer temperatures, bacteria can multiply rapidly. People also tend to cook outside, away from refrigerators, thermometers, and sinks more often. As a result, the number of foodborne illnesses often increases during the summer months. Safe food handling, especially when eating outdoors, is critical to protect yourself, your family, and your friends.

Stay healthy and safe by following these food safety guidelines:

  • Wash your hands before preparing food
  • Keep surfaces clean and germ-free
  • Separate cold foods from hot foods
  • Keep raw meat away from fresh food until cooked to proper temps
  • Keep your cold food cold
  • Chill your leftovers within 2-hours (if picnicking 1 hour)

Welcome Marlene Navarro!

We are very happy to welcome Marlene U. Navarro as the newest member of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) team. She has a degree in Early Childhood Studies and has been working with children and families for over 10 years. One of her goals is to reach parents that are ready and eager to bring more color to their tables. Introducing new foods can be a challenge with young children and this can make some parents feel a bit lost. Well, that's why we're here! Our community nutrition education program is all about learning together so that we incorporate fruits and vegetables into meals and make cooking fun by involving the whole family! It is wonderful to have Marlene join our team of educators to get out the message.
