Happy Newsletter Day, everyone!
I hope this correspondence finds you all feeling well and doing great. (I reversed the opening line from the last newsletter. Is it grammatically correct? Who knows.)
And a sincere and heartfelt Happy Fourth of July, too! I hope you were all able to relax and that you had the chance to enjoy a nice holiday weekend.
Now, back to today's regularly scheduled program.
Phase 2 started a few weeks ago, and we were able to open with a ton of restrictions. We had a few brave souls venture out of their caves for in-person training, and it was awesome. Nothing beats in-person training and the social interaction of another human being. (And getting out of the house is always more motivating than training in the comfort of your own home -- in my humble, science-backed, opinion).
The communication was a little tough at the beginning, though, and there were a few miscues here and there.
You could say that we had a bumpy start...

The good news is I learned a valuable communication lesson for the next pandemic:
I will personally be calling each and every client the night before their first training session, right around dinner time, to go over the re-entry protocol.

On to Phase Three!
Phase Three started on Monday, July 6th, 2020. Yay!
So, what does that mean for us?
Check out the list of the new guidelines, below:
1)
Masks are
required in common areas, during transitions, and while engaged in fitness activities that are not strenuous in nature.
2) When possible, physical distancing of 6 feet is required.
3)
Masks can be pulled down during strenuous activity, if you are able to maintain physical distancing of 14 feet.
4) Indoor group training classes are limited to a maximum of 4 participants.
5) Appointments must be scheduled with your coach or trainer in advance.
6) You cannot arrive more than 5 minutes before the start of a session.
7) Clients and trainers must disinfect fitness equipment
before and after each use.
8) Each session is capped at 60 minutes! (You cannot stay late to stretch.)
9) Bathrooms are open, but we encourage you to come dressed for your workout and to shower at home after your workout.
10) There isn't a 10th rule, but I think anyone who knows me well enough knows that I would be physically, mentally, and emotionally unable to leave this list at 9.
The Takeaway
Are these rules and restrictions ideal? No. But, they are way better than the previous phase, and I do believe that things will slowly begin to get better each and every week.
And yes, life has been crazy as of late, but
it has been 4 months. That, in my opinion, means we all have had plenty of time to adapt to the current environment. (And no, we are not "pivoting" to our "new normal." This is life right now. It will change eventually. Just keep riding the wave. Pardon the pun.)
I love you all, and I look forward to seeing more of you as the weeks progress and the progress progressively progresses.
Yours truly,
Miguel

And how it actually might do more harm, than good.
Pretty provocative, eh? This article is definitely worth a read, if for nothing else than understanding, a bit more, how the healing process in the body works after an acute injury.
Here's a brief excerpt:
Dr. Mirkin (the doctor who came up with the acronym RICE -- rest, ice, compression, elevation) now disagrees with this prescription. These days, he tells anyone who will listen that he was wrong about both rest and ice. He wrote the forward to Gary Reinl’s 2013 self-published book,
Iced! The Illusionary Treatment Option, which has become the bible of the growing anti-ice movement.
“My RICE guidelines have been used for decades, but new research shows rest and ice actually delay healing and recovery,” says Mirkin, now 84. Yes, says Mirkin, if your muscles are sore, you can relieve that pain with ice. But the inflammation causing that soreness is actually bringing healing to the body; by icing, you “dampen that immune response,” he says. “You think you’re recovering faster, but science has shown you’re not.”

The PEX Health and Fitness Re-Entry Protocol Video.
I am keeping this video in here for three reasons:
1) I have no other video to share.
2) These rules still apply.
3) It's awesome.
Also, I am thinking about doing more video entries for the newsletter. I think that would be fun. What do you think?

In this week's "Listen" section, we bring you a podcast between Tim Ferris, renowned podcaster, and John Paul DeJoria. JPD is the man, and his story is truly inspiring. He went from being homeless (twice) to co-founding TWO billion dollar companies. If you are looking for an easy listen, that is both motivating, and inspirational, I highly suggest giving this one a listen.
Here is a gem that I pulled out of it, that I will most likely never forget:
"In the end, everything will be okay. If it's not okay, it's not the end." - JPD
