JANET'S CORNER

The PSAT Test is back at CHSRC!

We are excited to announce that CHSRC will

be offering the PSAT test this October!

For over 20 years, CHSRC successfully administered the PSAT exclusively to homeschooling families. Unfortunately, for reasons we never understood, CHSRC's testing status became inactive and we weren't able to offer the test for two years.

We tirelessly worked seeking every possible avenue to solve this problem. In the process, we discovered that more than ever, homeschooling families around the country were having a hard time registering for the PSAT.

We also learned that CHSRC was not alone in looking for a solution. Arizona Families for Home Education, the Home Schooling Legal Defence association, and many other state leaders around the country were also looking for a solution to this problem.

With guidance from HSLDA, I started communicating with a representative of the College Board. Our testing status was soon reactivated! We are extremely thankful to once again have this opportunity available for homeschooling families.

The PSAT is no longer a paper and pencil test. It is now a digital test. Please visit the College Board for more information about the digital test.

CHSRC usually opens registration for the PSAT the first week in July. With the test being digital now, we are still learning new procedures. Our website will be updated regularly as the training process for the digital test continues.

It is wonderful to have organizations that seek to benefit the homeschooling community. If you find yourself in a situation where it appears you may have been discriminated against due to your homeschool status, please know you are not alone! We'll share our knowledge and answers with you or we'll direct you to other wonderful organizations such as AFHE and HSLDA.

EMBRACING THE LOCAL ADVANTAGE

Benefits of Shopping at a Homeschool Bookstore

In the digital age, the convenience of online shopping has revolutionized the way we acquire goods and services. However, when it comes to homeschooling, there is a unique charm and value in patronizing a local homeschool bookstore.

Our brick-and-mortar establishment offers an array of advantages that extend beyond the mere transaction of purchasing books and curriculum materials online. We believe there are compelling reasons why it is better to shop at Covenant Home School Resource Center for all your homeschool needs.

1. Personalized Assistance and Expertise

One of the standout advantages of our local homeschool bookstore is the personalized assistance and expertise provided by knowledgeable staff. Unlike online platforms where customers navigate through endless options without guidance, Covenant Home School Resource Center's staff has a deep understanding of the homeschooling community's needs. We can offer tailored recommendations based on a student's learning style, grade level, or specific educational requirements. This level of personalized service fosters a supportive environment, helping homeschooling parents make informed decisions about their curriculum choices.

2. Hands-On Exploration

Covenant Home School Resource Center provides an opportunity for hands-on exploration of educational materials. Parents and students can physically browse through books, flip through pages, and assess the quality of materials before making a purchase. This tactile experience is invaluable, allowing families to make informed decisions about the educational resources that align with their teaching philosophies and preferences. Unlike online shopping, where the look and feel of a product are often left to the imagination, shopping at CHSRC offers a sensory-rich experience.

3. Community Building

Covenant Home School Resource Center strives to contribute to the creation and sustenance of a vibrant homeschooling community. Our physical location often serves as a hub where like-minded families connect, share experiences, and exchange valuable insights. We host events, workshops, and support group activities, providing a platform for networking and mutual support. Helping to build these community connections can be particularly beneficial for homeschooling parents seeking advice, encouragement, and a sense of camaraderie.

4. Supporting a Local Nonprofit Ministry

By choosing to shop at CHSRC, families actively contribute to the well-being of their homeschool community. Our local resource center is integral to the furtherance of home education in Arizona. By supporting our resource center financially, you are helping us fulfill our mission to encourage and equip families for a successful homeschool journey.

5. Competitive Prices

Shopping at our local 501(c)(3) nonprofit homeschool curriculum and bookstore provides a myriad of benefits for homeschooling families. You can enjoy competitive prices on a popular selection of educational materials, including quality used books and new curriculum. The bookstore's commitment to affordability ensures that families can access essential learning resources without straining their budgets. Additionally, CHSRC does not collect sales tax which further enhances the cost-effectiveness of purchases, allowing customers to make the most of their educational investments. Furthermore, the convenience of in-person shopping eliminates shipping costs and delays, providing immediate access to materials.

While online shopping offers convenience and a vast array of choices, the unique advantages offered by Covenant Home School Resource Center make us an appealing option for homeschooling families. From personalized assistance and hands-on exploration to community building and supporting local businesses, the benefits extend far beyond the purchase of educational materials.

Embracing the local advantage in CHSRC is not just about acquiring books; it's about fostering connections, receiving expert guidance, and contributing to the flourishing of a vibrant homeschool community.

NEW LOYALTY PROGRAM

Shop and save!

We are excited to launch our new loyalty program!

With every purchase you make, you will earn points towards a discount. As you start checking out, you will need to enter your phone number or email. When you do, you will get 1 point for each dollar spent. After 200 points, you will qualify for a $5.00 discount on your next purchase!

CHSRC is joining the many small businesses and non-profits that are using a cash discount program to avoid increasing their prices.

With this program, our point-of-sale system automatically includes the credit card fees with the individual price of each book you buy (about 3%.) Those who wish to avoid this small increase, can pay in cash and get the cash discount!

What are some of the other ways to save at CHSRC?

  • Access a large selection of nicely discounted previously owned books.
  • Access a large selection of new curricula at great prices.
  • Touch and compare curriculum instead of buying something online to find out it isn't what you thought it would be.
  • Curriculum experts are available to answer your questions.
  • Expert advice and encouragement.
  • No shipping fees.
  • And much more!

As a non-profit CHSRC does not collect sales, this means that all families save at CHSRC!

In addition to finding books at amazing prices, families paying cash will save an additional 8.6% (no sales tax.)

Families paying with a credit card, also save 40%-90% off used books and an additional 5.1% (no sales tax.) Everyone wins by shopping at CHSRC!

One of my favorite things!

So many things at CHSRC make me think of the iconic song "My Favorite Things." Some might equate testing to... "When a dog bites, when a bee stings..." NOT at CHSRC. Perhaps, that is why our testing is one of my favorite times.

WHAT CHSRC NEEDS

The homeschool books and education items we are looking for need to be mostly current edition and in good or better than good condition (meaning no water damage, used but clean, no extreme wear, complete, etc.)

The items we are in most need of are:

  • Current edition homeschool curriculum.
  • Current Edition unmarked homeschool workbooks.
  • One edition old curriculum may be accepted (one edition old, meaning if the current edition is the 4th edition, the old edition would be the 3rd edition.)
  • Miscellaneous DK or Usborn-style books.
  • Family-friendly chapter books and classics are always well-loved here at CHSRC.
  • Complete educational large-piece puzzles (Please keep in mind that the number of pieces needs to be one that our staff can easily count/verify they are complete)
  • Complete educational games that are easy for us to verify they are complete.
  • Children's books: Due to space issues we can only accept classic children's books such as Dr. Seuss, etc.
  • Vintage educational items or books in reasonably good shape may be accepted.
  • Microscopes: In good usable condition/without need of repairs.
  • Beakers, and any chemistry/biology glass items and tools, need to be like-new/clean with no stains or residues.
  • Plastic chemistry and biology individual lab items, need to look like new. Non-discolored and clean.

Unfortunately, right now we do not have space for:

  • Science kits
  • Chemicals
  • Most old edition curriculum.
  • Magazines.
  • Encyclopedias
  • General books that are not homeschool/educational specific.
  • Public school curriculum.
  • Store-bought per grade level general workbooks.

If you have biology specimens, please let us know in advance so we can contact our science teacher to find out if she can use them.

Why don't we accept donations of cassette tapes or VHS tapes?

Because we're trying to fast-forward into the future, not rewind to the past!

Want to learn how CHSRC and Serna Educational services got connected? Read more....

One of my favorite things is to meet new homeschooling families.

About 5 years ago I had the honor to meet Brenda Serna. Her little one was in

the third grade, and Brenda was exploring this "homeschooling thing"

to make sure that it was truly doable. She also needed some specific input as

her family was considering a transition out of the public school system.

We were delighted to answer all her questions and loved how she could connect

with other mothers at CHSRC.

Thinking of Brenda makes me smile. She soon started homeschooling

and became not only a great friend to CHSRC but also one of our greatest

cheerleaders.

Since the beginning of her homeschool journey, Brenda had in her

heart a desire to bless the homeschooling community. Right away, I loved how

she can’t help sharing about CHSRC and regularly sends families to visit us!

As her experience in homeschooling grew, she soon was ready to bless homeschooling families with a venture of her own!

In 2021, Brenda started producing the Arizona Homeschool Email Newsletter when she saw the need for one place where families could find vetted homeschool-friendly events.

CHSRC receives many requests to post in our newsletter many types

of homeschool activities and events. Even if we would love to vet them all, we

don't have the manpower to do so.

Alas... The solution became clear! CHSRC finds in Brenda a person

who not only loves home education but will also jealously work for the benefit

of homeschooling families. CHSRC is forwarding many homeschool opportunities to

Brenda, she will vet them, and if they meet the required standards, they will

be published in the Arizona Homeschool Email

Newsletter. Brenda is an expert at networking

with homeschooling families and finding great opportunities to list in her

newsletter.  The goal of this newsletter is to provide a vetted

list of homeschool-related classes, workshops, field trips, discounts,

freebies, and much more around the state of Arizona! The newsletter is sent out

weekly at no cost or obligation.

I want to thank Brenda for her desire to serve the homeschooling

community, for publishing the Arizona Homeschool Email Newsletter, and for

supporting the local homeschool community by also supporting CHSRC!

Please complete this form to request to have your homeschool-related classes/activities and business, including field trips, considered to be listed in the Arizona Homeschool Email Newsletter.
