Alumni News
2017 Fall Appeal
Our fall appeal, directed toward alumni and parents of alumni, has been sent in the mail. Thank you to all those who have already made gifts to Serra, especially during our recent phonathon.

Our focus is participation. We are grateful for each and every gift which seeks to inspire, transform and innovate here at Serra. Please consider sending back the return envelope, or making an online gift at the link below. We are committed to reaching our goal of 750 alumni donors by June 30 in honor of Serra's upcoming 75th anniversary.

2017 Fall Alumni Games
Serra's fall alumni games were held Thanksgiving week. Thank you to all those who participated

Alumni basketball and poker (sponsored by Serra wrestling), were held the night before Thanksgiving. Great turnouts for each event. The pool was full of Padre alumni on Thanksgiving morning, where an action-packed water polo game was held. We hope to see everyone back next year!
Around the Halls
Padres Explore Washington, D.C.
An audience with a Supreme Court Justice. A meeting with a Member of Congress. An opportunity of a lifetime. Led by Kevin Carey and Sean Dugoni of Serra's history department, 22 Padres spent a week in our nation's capital learning about our federal government through the Close Up Washington, D.C. program.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, the great uncle of Serra junior Matthew Olson, invited the visiting Padres to speak with him and hear his thoughts on the purpose of law. He shared his wisdom and experience gained over almost 30 years on the Supreme Court.
Serra students sat in the courtroom and watched as a verdict was read by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and as an attorney was sworn in to argue before the Supreme Court. Justice Kennedy gave each Padre a custom-made bookmark and a copy of the Constitution as they left.

The group also met with Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo), who sang Serra's praises. A Mercy-Burlingame graduate, Rep. Speier told the Padres, "Your parents send you to Serra because they love you. Serra gives you a great formation to be wonderful men in this world."
Open House: This Sunday!
Middle-school students and their families are invited to Serra's Open House at 1 p.m. on Sunday, December 3. It will be an exciting afternoon for
middle- school  students to explore all that Serra has to offer.

"Open House is a wonderful event that gives interested families an opportunity to meet faculty and staff, school administrators, coaches, current students and parents," noted Serra Admissions Director Carl Dos Remedios '78. "The day allows those in attendance to learn more about the depth and breadth of our curricular and cocurricular programs. It's a great way to experience our school community beyond a website or brochure."
National Honor Society
Sixty-six Padres were inducted into the National Honor Society on November 15. NHS is a national organization that was established to recognize outstanding high school students.

More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. Students must submit a lengthy application detailing their academic achievements and leadership experience and community service activities.

A pplicants must be juniors or seniors with a minimum of a 3.5 unweighted grade point average, or a 3.7 weighted GPA.  Serra began its Excelsior Chapter in 1993.
Sports Update: Football to Play for CCS Championship
Varsity football will take on the St. Francis Lancers for the CCS Open D2 championship  this Saturday  night at Independence High School. Kickoff is scheduled for  7 p.m.  The Padres went undefeated during the WCAL season and set a new league record for points scored

Serra football is currently ranked #27 in California by Cal-Hi Sports.

In the pool, Serra water polo players Brian Butler and Danny Gilmartin recently earned All-CCS honors. Reggie Greene and Mitchell Alandt were also named to the All-WCAL team.
Fr. Greg Boyle
Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J. was the keynote speaker at Parent Night on Monday, November 20. Fr. Boyle is the author of the popular book, "Tattoos on the Heart."

Fr. Boyle is an internationally-acclaimed author, orator and a man for change. He is the founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang rehabilitation organization in the world. He shared how compassion, kindness and kinship are the tools to fight despair and decrease marginalization. Through his stories and parables, Fr. Boyle reminded our Serra community that no life is less valuable than another.

The following day, Fr. Boyle spoke at the annual Thanksgiving Prayer Service to students, faculty and staff members. He touched on the values elicited in Serra's definition of brotherhood: respect, compassion, inclusion and integrity.
