Serra Golf Classic
Happy New Year to everyone. 2016 is off to a great start. Our admissions deadline passed last week and we are looking forward to another large incoming freshman class next school year. I am proud to be able to say that 11% of our student body has a Serra alumnus as a father. In addition, 22 members of our full-time faculty/staff are Serra graduates, and that contributes to the Serra legacy living on.
I look forward to seeing you all this semester at some of our upcoming events, including the 50-year-club luncheon, Fund a Dream Scholarship Dinner and the annual Serra Golf Classic. Go Padres!

Michael Trucco '88 is now appearing on the Fox TV series Grandfathered, starring John Stamos. Look for him as character Craig, starting in episode 17. He will also be in an upcoming movie, The Bye Bye Man, opposite Carrie-Anne Moss, opening in theatres this October. Michael also just finished filming Hush, which will be on Netflix soon.
The 2016 baseball season will be Gary Hughes' 50th in professional baseball. The longtime scout is currently employed by the Boston Red Sox and was recently featured in an article on
Baseball Hot Corner:
Gary has a passion for both sports and people, and takes time to help and train fellow scouts. From the article:
"I think the biggest thing is Gary's loyalty. Loyalty is one of his greatest attributes,'' said Cliff Bellone '59
, Hughes' best friend in the world. "We are both strong on that idea of loyalty."
"Gary doesn't forget where he comes from,'' said former Cubs GM Jim Hendry, who is now a special assistant to Yankees GM Brian Cashman. "He's taken tons of money out of his own pocket to help people. He would be a lot more wealthy if he wasn't the generous man he is. There's a box seat in heaven waiting for him, no doubt."
Serra basketball is starting out strong in defense of its 2015 CCS championship, sporting a 7-3 record thus far. The Padres won the Marin Catholic Tournament over Christmas Break, with senior swingman Jeremiah Testa earning MVP honors. With the start of league play last week, the program swept Valley Christian last Tuesday night at home and has a big matchup with Riordan tomorrow night at Morton Family Gym. Serra is currently ranked number four by the San Jose Mercury News.
Under new head coach Mike Klobuchar '90, the Serra varsity wrestling team won the 49th Annual Peninsula Invitational hosted by Half Moon Bay High School. The Padres scored 177 team points and were led by individual champions Evan Behrendt, Dominick Christmas and Nick Agorio. All Serra wrestlers who competed finished in the top six of their respective weight classes and brought home medals. The Padres also swept Archbishop Mitty in all levels last Wednesday night at home to open the WCAL season.
Varsity soccer is 5-4 on the year, with victories over Gunn, Mills and Mountain View, among others. Junior Julio Rodriguez is leading the Padres with five goals on the season. JV is 5-2-2 and the freshman team is 8-1 and undefeated in league play.
