Assemblyman Kevin Mullin '88 Visits Serra |
Assemblyman Kevin Mullin '88 ventured back to his old stomping grounds this month, paying a visit to Sean Dugoni's Democracy Live Club.
Mullin currently serves as speaker pro tempore of the California State Assembly.
The Serra grdauate discussed his experience in government, current political issues and the rewarding nature of public service. He offered himself as an ally and a resource for students seeking internships or help with state government issues.
The Serra alumnus also held a question and answer session, discussing issues ranging from greenhouse gases to freedom of speech to election reform. He told the Padres that he and his colleagues need fresh ideas from young people and encouraged them not to shy away from the sometimes negative atmosphere of the American political system.
"Real progress comes from action in the middle of the political spectrum," said Mullin. "The best ideas are often found in compromise." He concluded that his work in government has been "an incredibly rewarding experience, because you get to see the positive effects of your efforts on a daily basis."

State Football Championship |
Serra's varsity football team capped a historic season with a 38-14 victory over the Cajon Cowboys to bring home the CIF Division 2AA state title. The Padre defense stole the show in the championship at Sacramento State University, as they held the nation's number three passing offense to their season low of 14 points.
Patrick Nunn limited the nation's number one receiver to a season low as the rest of the defense generated seven sacks and three turnovers. Malakai Rango's 72-yard kickoff return sparked the go-ahead touchdown. The lead was never relinquished, as the offensive line opened up holes for Isiah Kendrick and David Coker to put the game out of reach. Kendrick led the Padres in scoring with four touchdowns. The Padres finished the season ranked first in the CCS, eighth in the state, and 42nd in the nation.
The team earned four banners (WCAL, CCS, NorCal, State) for the rafters of Morton Family Gymnasium this year. Nunn and 'Atonio Mafi signed with Pac-12 programs last month, committing to Washington State and UCLA, respectively.
Congratulations on a memorable season, Padres!

The Serra community once again supported supported the Adopt a Family program during Advent. The gift cards and presents were received by the Redwood City Catholic Worker, which serves more than 1,000 people in the local area including youth, veterans, homeless and immigrants.
Our community adopted 13 families and raised more than $10,000 in contributions of money, gift items and gift cards. After a semester of responding to various natural disasters, Serra continued to support this annual holiday program. On behalf of Campus Ministry, Student Activities and the entire Serra community, thank you to all those who gave. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Soccer will look to repeat as CCS champions, after raising their second banner in four years last spring. Seniors Iver Lyche, Adam Joss, Esteban Thumas and Colin O'Donoghue will lead the way for the Padres on the pitch. They are ranked sixth in the Prep2Prep Top 25.
