Around the Halls
Serra @ SAP
Twenty of Serra's first-year Design Thinking students traveled to SAP recently to meet with Serra parent Andrea Anderson, who is Vice President - User Experience at the renowned tech company. Students were able to interact with a panel of young, accomplished professionals at SAP who shared wisdom regarding their educational and career paths, as well as their current design thinking projects.

Among their many novel concepts, the panel discussed a digital assistant for the workplace which can be used to set up meetings, check company policy and utilize machine learning to streamline workflows. A designer on the team also detailed the importance of understanding user experience in his bid to reduce food waste at Costco. The staff member immersed himself for weeks at a Costco store, learning and understanding ways to streamline the store's food operations. He even flew to Liverpool to find out how a store there finds ways to reduce delivery time. The key, he said, is to think about things from the user's perspective.

The panel, which included designers, instructors and project managers, then gave feedback to the Padres after hearing the students' project presentations. Students were also able to tour SAP's facilities and gain an understanding of the company's role in Silicon Valley and the world. We at Serra are grateful to SAP for hosting our Padres and giving them an immersive experience inside the world of a major technology company.
Adopt-A-Family
Many thanks to our outstanding Serra community for making the holidays a little bit easier for 19 local families. We adopted 14 families from the Redwood City Catholic Worker House and five families from Northern Valley Catholic Social Service.  In addition, several groups donated to people who were affected by the fires in Butte County.

In all, this year's gift cards donations totaled $7,920. Members of our community also gave $2,759 in cash and about $3,000 in in-kind donations.

"We would like to thank everyone for their awesome support of the Adopt-a-Family Christmas drive," said Christian Service Coordinator Christian Cahill. "It was such an overwhelming success! both communities were so grateful to receive such an abundance of gifts and contributions."
Crab Cioppino
Come and support the Serra Athletics Department on Friday, January 25 at the Crab Cioppino Dinner. This lively event helps to fund all 14 sports programs. Bring your friends and  CLICK HERE to reserve your spot!
Student Body President to Attend Northwestern
Serra student body president and Crocker Middle School alumnus Arman Popli '19 will attend  Northwestern University next year. Arman is an honor student who also excels in music and athletics.

Following his Early Decision acceptance last month, Arman is looking forward to the rigorous academic culture of Northwestern, coupled wi th Big 10 athletics. He plans to major in political science and apply for a spot in the Mathematical Methods in Social Sciences (MMSS) program this coming spring. The program "enables a select group of high-ability students to combine the study of social sciences with rigorous training in mathematics, statistics, and formal modeling," according to Northwestern.

Beyond his exceptional GPA (4.4) and SAT (1510), Arman is a member of Serra's Mock Trial team, a standout wrestler, a singer in the Men's Choir and Serranaders a capella group, and a Campus Ministry advisory leader. Two Serra connections helped boost his application and give him real-world experience, as he recently interned for Assemblyman Kevin Mullin '88 and Congresswoman Jackie Speier (Mercy '68).

"When I began attending Serra, I was somewhat unmotivated and was not attaining the highest grades," Arman reflected. "But over the last four years, Serra has helped me succeed in a myriad of different areas (academics, athletics, the arts, etc.), developing not only my academic proficiencies but also other interdisciplinary skills that will benefit me in college and beyond. Most important, Serra has helped me to grow into a good person with a strong moral compass. I am incredibly thankful to all the amazing faculty and staff at Serra for their unwavering support."
Serra Wrestling Wins Tournament
Serra's wrestling program delivered an outstanding showing at the Bianchini Tournament last weekend. The varsity Padres won the tournament, finishing with 131.5 points and led by Jack Woods and Marcellus Eison. Arman Popli, Mikey Pechina, Charles Matthews, Enzo Cappabianca, Ethan Butts and Alan Kaufmann also medaled for Serra. Woods became the first Padre wrestler to win the Pat Lovell Holiday Wrestling Classic a week earlier, which features state-ranked wrestlers annually. He was the 170-pound weight class champion.

The JV and frosh teams were also outstanding last weekend, collecting 16 of 19 possible medals. Jacob Aho, Santiago Brent, Aidan Quinn and Nico Saenz were all tournament champions at their respective weight classes.
