I hope everyone enjoyed the Memorial Day holiday and were able to set aside time to honor those who lost their lives for our country, especially our Padre brothers. We are continually looking for more names to add to our Wall of Honor in our lobby, which lists Serra alumni who have served in the armed forces. Please click here if you have an addition.

Here at Serra, we are getting ready for our annual golf tournament at the Peninsula Golf and County Club on June 26. This is the ninth straight sell-out for this event. See you there!

Sincerely,

Retirements
Four legendary Serra staff members are retiring this summer: Susan Cordes (12 years of service), Bob Ferretti (31 years), Robin Jensen (27 years) and Rob Solari (40 years). Susan was exceptional as Serra's librarian. Bob has served as a theology teacher, baseball coach and dean of students. Rob has coached and taught biology, while Robin has served for decades in the development office, helping Serra to improve and move forward in fundraising and renovation. We are grateful to these four individuals for their commitment to Serra and their service as role models and mentors to our Padres throughout the decades. Congratulations on your retirement!
Perfect SAT Score
Serra senior Will Petersen scored a perfect 800 on two sections of the SAT II this year: Mathematics II and US History. Will is one of Serra' s 2017 valedictorians and will attend UCLA, where he will major in economics.

In addition, the following underclassmen also earned perfect scores on math sections of the SAT II this year:  Jake Dorais, Abhijeeth Erra, Jason Li, Sean O'Brien, Frank Wang and Tyler Wang.
CCS and State Wrap Up
Serra's spring sports wrapped up their seasons with track and field's 4x400 relay team ( Brendon Carbullido, Scott Fitzpatrick, Anthony Ovalle and  Tyler Mak) earning a fourth straight CCS championship. The track team finished second overall in the section, and sophomore Parker McDonald broke a school record with a  6'7" high jump. He was the CCS champion and finished seventh overall in the State Finals. Sophomore Brooks Taner  also broke two swimming records:

Varsity 100 butterfly - Brooks Taner 48.88 (Previous record: Leffie Crawford - 49.27 in 1998)

Varsity 200 freestyle - Brooks Taner 1:39.83 (Previous record: Olympic Bronze-Medalist Tom McBreen - 1:41.20 in 1970)

2017 Shea Award
Serra's Shea Award was established in 1966 in honor of James P. Shea '58, who fought in the Vietnam War and was killed in action. The annual award goes to a senior athlete who displays outstanding sportsmanship, athletic ability and excellence in the classroom.

Two multi-sport athletes shared the honor in 2017, with Arvin Bahia (pictured) and Clark Chase earning the award. Bahia was an impact water polo player and swimmer for the Padres, proving to be one of the best water polo players in Serra history. He broke longtime school records for career and single-season goals this past year. An honor student enrolled in Advanced Placement classes, Bahia will attend Santa Clara University in the fall and play water polo for the Broncos.

"The faculty and coaches at Serra have been very supportive," said Bahia.  "I feel like they took me to the next level.  In addition, the brotherhood is as-advertised.  I experienced that through my teammates in the pool as well as in the classroom."

Chase provided outstanding leadership on the field as a football and lacrosse player, as well as off the field in his role as Serra's executive student body president. Clark was a captain on this year's lacrosse team and received the Stephen Scott Inspirational Award for his leadership throughout Serra football's run to the NorCal D2A championship. He was named to the WCAL All-League team in both football and lacrosse. Always a charismatic leader, Chase was named Joe Serra, Biggest Contributor and Biggest Comedian by his classmates in the Senior Polls. He will attend the University of Oregon next year.

"I love Serra on my way out just as much as I did on my way in," said Chase. "Throughout my four years here I've really grown as a person. In my last year especially, I've learned a ton about myself and life in general. I love and appreciate Serra so much."
