Thank you to all of you who participated in Career Day on Wednesday.  It was an outstanding day, and our students are grateful for your insight and expertise. Our alumni from a wide variety of professions spoke about their career paths and provided our Padres with valuable advice.

We were delighted to honor  Mike Callagy '80  with the   Junípero Serra Award.  The former San Mateo deputy police chief and current deputy manager has dedicated his life to serving and empowering others. Mike is a perfect example of what it means to be a Serra Padre.

Next up are our  Alumni Games on Saturday, April 4. You are invited to join us on the blacktop near the baseball field for a barbecue - please bring your family. It will be an awesome day of volleyball and baseball. If you are interested in participating, please email me at [email protected] .

Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Three Mentors Honored with In Via Award on April 16

Three extraordinary men - Pete Jensen, Tom MacKenzie and Ralph Stark - will be honored with the 2015 In Via Award on April 16. The In Via Award  is presented each year to a non-alumnus who has led by Christian example and has shown ongoing support of Serra.

Pete Jensen coached baseball and taught Architectural Design. Tom Mackenzie served as the Serra dean of men, counselor and a football coach. Ralph Stark taught English, led the Serra Anglers Club, and was a golf coach.

"Pete, Tom and Ralph mentored our Serra Padres for many years," noted Serra President Lars Lund. "They were excellent role models who helped to develop young men of faith, wisdom and service. It's wonderful that so many of our alumni still keep in touch with these outstanding men. They obviously have had such a positive influence on their students' lives."

If you would like to attend the In Via Award ceremony on April 16, please R.S.V.P. to Robin Jensen at [email protected].

2014 WCAL Football Banner Dedicated to Fr. Joe Bradley '73
On February 21, the varsity basketball team took on the Valley Christian Warriors. It was a memorable half time moment when the varsity football team honored Fr. Joe Bradley '73 for his unwavering support, friendship and spiritual guidance.

The crowd cheered when Head Coach Patrick Walsh and his team dedicated the 2014 WCAL championship banner to Fr. Joe, who has had a tremendous influence on the football program for many years. From the Chapel series to plays on the field, long bus rides to celebrations at the end of the season, Fr. Joe has been there every step of the way to mentor the team. This is the first time in school history that a banner has been dedicated to a special person.

Strides for Life Crab Cioppino Dinner is April 18

This year's Strides for Life Crab Cioppino Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 18 in memory of Serra alumnus Dylan Cappel '96. Dylan passed away from colon cancer at the age of 23 while training for a berth on the 2004 United States Olympic Rowing Team. Dylan graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000. At the time of his death, he was the assistant men's varsity rowing coach at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Every year, members of the Serra community unite to make a difference in the fight against colorectal cancer. Funds raised will provide colonoscopies and other related medical services to people who are uninsured and under insured.

Students and adults are needed to help with decorations and set up, registration, ticket sales, serving dinner and clean up. For more information about Strides for Life or to register for the dinner, please CLICK HERE.

Giants Pitcher Jeremy Affeldt Partners With Campus Ministry

San Francisco Giants pitcher Jeremy Affeldt recently spoke to students during a special assembly about his charity, Generation Alive.

During Lent, Serra's Campus Ministry Department will partner with Generation Alive to raise awareness about hunger in San Mateo County and in Nicaragua. During the assembly, Padres were urged to be compassionate and to take action.

"We are committed to working with Generation Alive to make 25,000 meals," noted Campus Ministry Director Billy Byrnes. "This effort will require a lot of human power, and we know that the Padre community will respond generously."
