Covid-19 Update

We continue to operate under the guidance that was in place in March 2022.

If a student or faculty/staff member has Covid, he or she should isolate for five days and wear a mask for five days upon return to school.

Those who have been exposed to Covid should follow the Mask to Stay, Test to Play Option.

Safety

The safety of Elyria Catholic students is our utmost priority. All Ohio schools are required to annually recertify their Emergency Management Plans. Elyria Catholic’s most recent plan was certified by the Ohio Department of Public Safety on June 22, 2022. Each year, Elyria Catholic conducts nine fire drills, three tornado drills, and three safety drills as required by the State of Ohio. Prior to the end of the 2022 calendar year, Elyria Catholic will need to complete a full-scale safety drill to remain compliant. More information will be provided about this significant drill at a later date.

At the start of the 2022-23 school year, all faculty and staff will have access to the most recently approved Emergency Management Plan, and school safety will be a critical component of our opening faculty meetings. On August 26, we will conduct class meetings in which safety information will be reviewed with students.

Oftentimes, the most important safety tips we receive are from our students and parents. We encourage students and parents to be vigilant about the safety of our school community and urge you to call or email Mrs. Lester or Mr. Taylor if you have concerns. As school safety has become an increasing concern in recent years, Elyria Catholic students have demonstrated their willingness to inform members of faculty and staff when they have concerns. Please encourage your teenagers to continue to inform faculty and staff when or if they have a safety concern. It’s important that we work together as a school community on this very important issue.

Drug Testing

Near the end of the 2022-23 school year, 354 of our students took part in a program in which a sample of hair the width of a pencil tip was tested for nicotine, marijuana, cocaine, opioids, phencyclidine, and amphetamines. Forty-five students did not have a sufficient sample of hair and were unable to be tested. We are working with the company and our hair stylists to improve samples for the upcoming school year. Of the 309 students who had hair samples sufficient for

testing, 284 students were negative for the drugs indicated. The remaining twenty-five students tested positive for at least one of the drugs mentioned above with eighteen testing positive for nicotine and seven testing positive for marijuana. We have contacted or will be contacting all families of students who tested positive.

To provide an environment that is healthy for students, we must maintain strictly enforced rules concerning the possession and use of mood-modifying chemicals. Students may not consume, sell, deliver, transmit or have in their possession alcohol, cigarettes, or products with nicotine, any mood-modifying chemicals, JUULS/Vapes, controlled substances, look-alike drugs, or drug-related paraphernalia while in school or on school property or while attending a school activity. Elyria Catholic High School recognizes that nicotine and drug dependency is a treatable disease and will extend to the student and their family all the support that is available.

Please carefully review the drug-testing policy in the 2022-23 Student Handbook that has been uploaded to Final Forms. We look forward to partnering with you to ensure that your teens are safe and healthy and are part of a safe and healthy community.
