Message from the Safety office

Good afternoon,

We’ve now entered the month of October, the month of NFL football, baseball playoffs without the Twins, and Halloween. It’s also the month where our risks are increased due to the proximity of the freeze up and plans for the off season consume our minds. We have a significant amount of work to accomplish between now and freeze up and the likelihood of an incident rises because of minds not being on task, complacency setting in, and attitudes changing. All of these can be, and must be, overcome through resiliency and constancy of purpose.

In the month of September, we saw a significant increase in the number of property damages, utility hits, and injuries in the past month, a trend that cannot continue into October. Three Park Construction employees sustained injuries, one of which you will see a Lessons Learned on next week, damaged 12 utilities and 12 pieces of equipment, all in the span of one month. We need everyone to exert extra energy to finish these jobs safe.

Not all is doom and gloom though. I would like to say that many of you have done an incredible job this year in all aspects of the work. Supervisors have been mentoring crew members, experienced laborers and operators are helping younger, less experienced people, and crews coming together for a shared purpose and finishing the year strong.

Community Outreach

Park Construction has been hitting the road and promoting work within our trades. We’ve recently attended the Spring Lake Park Schools “Start Your Engines” Back to School event. We were able to display one of our Park Ave Dump Trucks and a Cat skid loader for students (and adults) to climb in, check out, and ask questions. The air horn on the dump truck quickly became a crowd favorite. A big thank you to Mike Fjelstad and Logan Niedzeilski for staffing the event and promoting the trades.

Park was also a participating member of the 2022 Day of the Dozers Event benefiting Children’s Minnesota. Park had a Cat D5 dozer available for children to take a ride in and get an “in the seat” experience operating heavy equipment. Tony Van was kind enough to donate his time and operate the machine while providing smiles on many faces, including his daughter's (see pic below). The day was a huge success raising $80,000 for Children’s Minnesota and promoting the trades for generations to come.

We’ve also been busy recruiting new talent for Park Construction at various College Campus Career Fairs. Park is accepting applications for Summer 2023 Internships in the Construction Management & Engineering related fields. Teams from our Grand Forks and Spring Lake Park offices have attending events at Minnesota State University – Moorehead, North Dakota State University, University of Wisconsin – Stout, Dunwoody College of Technology, and an upcoming event at Minnesota State University – Mankato.  Thank you to all the employees that have volunteered their time to staff our booth and educate potential candidates about how they can help Park Construction “Build the Future”.

What do you like to do in the off season? Late fall and into the winter I will be milking cows and cutting wood. That's pretty much what I enjoy doing. I'll also be taking a lot of training at the union hall this winter. I plan to do my Grade and Stakes, excavator and blade class, as well as taking my MSHA New Miner course.

Why do you work safe? I enjoy hunting and fishing too much to injured. Hard to climb a tree with a broken bone or bad knees. I also don't want to see any one get hurt, regardless if it's at work or at home.
