We are deeply saddened to share the news of Dr. William “Bill” Powell’s passing on Sunday, Nov. 12.
Bill’s work to restore the American chestnut tree to the landscape will be his legacy. He was a dedicated researcher and educator remembered for his warm and generous spirit. He fostered an environment of teamwork and collaboration across the ESF campus and the greater research community to restore the American chestnut to the landscape.
Bill came to ESF in 1989 and founded the American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project with his colleague Dr. Charles Maynard to bring the American chestnut tree back from the brink of extinction. He spent the next 34 years working toward that goal. During that time, he mentored countless students who took his classes and worked in his lab, many of whom continue to bring his work to fruition. Bill’s research will not only restore the American chestnut, but lays the foundation for the restoration of other tree species.
Bill was a passionate advocate for the American chestnut tree and the work done at ESF by his fellow researchers. He was the go-to expert on the American chestnut tree, making time to educate the public about the important role the it played in the country’s history.
A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 at Grace Covenant Church, 5300 NY 31, Clay, NY. Burial will be private. A complete obituary is available at New Comer Funeral Home. Bill requested people dress casually: blue jeans, flannel shirts, and white socks are appropriate.
Bill’s contributions to tree science will continue to impact the American landscape and inspire generations of students and researchers.
Our thoughts are with his family.
