The Passing of Past National Commander James Sims

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Sims, a past National Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Jim was a proud veteran who dedicated his life to serving his country and advocating for his fellow servicemembers. A recipient of the Purple Heart in Vietnam, Sims was a testament to the bravery and sacrifices made by our nation's military. He was a steadfast advocate for the rights of all veterans, working tirelessly to improve their quality of life and ensure that their sacrifices were never forgotten.

Sims was a 1962 graduate of Saint Martin’s University in Olympia, WA. After graduation from college, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and served as a US Marine for more than 26 years, retiring in 1988 as a Colonel. He also earned his Masters degree from George Washington University.

Always humble he would never boast about his valorous career but his numerous military decorations told the story of his gallantry for him. They included the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star with V, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with V, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and numerous other US and foreign decorations.

Sims was a respected leader and a voice for veterans across the country. He was deeply committed to the mission, which is to foster an environment of goodwill and camaraderie among its members, to provide needed assistance and support to veterans and their families, and to preserve the memory of fallen heroes.

Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the innumerable veterans he helped. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends during this very difficult time.
