Today, many claim to have a murshid, but often the “guide” they follow may only have studied spirituality or psychology from books. A true murshid is something far beyond that. The masters have explained that there are four levels of irshād (guidance) — and at each level, the guides differ in rank, knowledge, and spiritual power.
According to the awliyaullah, who have lived and mastered this path, the science of guidance has its own secrets and disciplines, passed through lifetimes of spiritual experience. These teachings come from Mawlana Shaykh Nazim ق, Grandshaykh Abdullah ad-Daghestani ق, and Grandshaykh Sharafuddin ق, who described the distinct levels of guidance.
Companionship with such a guide nourishes the soul even before words are spoken. Capacities of this level of irshad:
-
Perceives the tasbīḥ of all creation — sensing the praises, vibrations, and inner signals of every being.
-
Understands each seeker’s unique language of body, soul, and temperament, even the unconscious praise within non-believers.
-
Knows the angelic guardianship assigned to each servant.
-
Remains continuously connected via an unseen “umbilical cord” — to the Prophetic heart, through which barakah flows to followers.
-
Restores divine obligations — teaching ḥalāl and ḥarām with clarity, reviving prayer and remembrance even in difficult conditions.
-
Intercedes with adab, repenting on behalf of followers in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ
“We sent not a messenger but to be obeyed, by the permission of Allah. If, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you and sought Allah’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had sought forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Ever-Returning (at-Tawwab), Most Merciful (Ar-Raheem).”
Surah An-Nisa (4:64)
A true murshid stands as a servant-intercessor in the Prophet ﷺ’s footsteps. When his follower sins or forgets to repent, the murshid himself repents on their behalf — presenting them spiritually before the Prophet ﷺ, who in turn seeks forgiveness for them before Allah ﷻ. This reflects the hidden mercy of that verse: through the Prophet’s light, the murshid becomes a means for the servant’s return to Divine forgiveness.
