Carroll-ers bring Christmas cheer by conducting 4th annual Christmas Tour at Broomall Rehabilitation
On Saturday, our Carroll Carolers from CSC, Best Buddies, and the Band conducted our 4th annual Christmas Tour at Broomall Rehab! They performed two Christmas shows to bring Christmas cheer to the residents and dementia unit at Broomall Rehab. They enjoyed a nice lunch at Joes Pizza in Broomall to wrap up the day. Thirty-five Carroll students with Mr. Larimer and Fr. Spez gave up their Saturday morning to spread Christmas joy to these great people. Thankful for Ms. Mscisz and St. Katharine’s Day School students for joining us as well! #CarrollChristmas
Archbishop Carroll family shows holiday spirit with nearly 200 Christmas inflatables
A Sea of Inflatables makes up “The Christmas House” located on Fairview Road in King of Prussia, home to Christopher Anderson ’18 and Tommy Anderson ’20.

The Anderson Family moved into their King of Prussia home in December 2006, and have been decorating for the holidays ever since.

Through the years, Chris became increasingly involved in the holiday decorating. “Our family loved Christmas and it was a fun way to celebrate. We started out with 7-8 inflatables. Every year after Christmas we would buy more when they were on sale. Year after year, it grew and grew to what it is today.”

Today, nearly 200 inflatables sit on the King of Prussia property during the Christmas season. The Anderson Family even upgraded their electrical panel to handle all of the added electricity.

“The community has always been very supportive of the display each year,” said Chris. “The kids in the neighborhood are so excited to drive by, and seeing the smiles on their faces is worth all the hard work. The amount of cars that drive by each night is extremely rewarding and reminds us why we do the display each year.”

If you’re looking for something special to do around the holidays, check out this unbelievable Christmas display! Thank you to the Anderson Family for bringing so much spirit to the holidays!

Featured Teacher: Mr. Gallagher
Broadcast Journalism & Media Production
Why did you want to be a teacher? ”Before teaching I did web design work for a wholesale company. I was unhappy with the monotony of a desk job in an office and the lack of creative expression. I wanted a job that would be dynamic and mentally stimulating every day, and would allow me to have fun and express myself I recalled my time in high school, and thought of the teachers who made a lasting impact on me in my formative years and realized I wanted to help young individuals in the same way they helped me. I could help teens mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, while sharing the various loves for which I had originally went to school- video production and digital media.”

Why do you enjoy teaching your subject? ”I grew up with computers and technology and always had an interest in movies and TV, so everything I teach has been a lifelong passion of mine. My first ever job was working at a theatre, and my undergrad degree is in Film and Video with a minor in web development. It is so fun to discuss with students the intricacies of a movie, and analyze them in the same way they do a novel in their English class. Entertainment is such a big component of their lives and I think it is important for them to understand what they are absorbing subconsciously while watching something.”

How long have you been teaching at Carroll? “This is my fifth year at Carroll. There were students who graduated last year that I had known since they were freshmen so it felt a little weird at the start of the year when I no longer saw them in the TV studio or the halls every day.”

Fun Facts:
- I am an extremely avid movie fan and am at the theatre several times a week. Last calendar year I saw 144 different movies in theatres. My current count for 2019 is 104... so I have some catching up to do if I want to break my record.

- I married my senior prom date, who I originally met on Kairos. It's always fun to tell the seniors this because you can tell from their facial reactions that they are thinking about who they're taking to prom or who they met on Kairos.

- I have three dogs, Nelson, Murdock, and Jessica Bones. The boys are Australian Shepherds. Jessie is a shepherd mix.

- In addition to movies I collect board games and comic books. Carroll's Game Club is largely fueled by games on loan from my personal collection.

Carroll Crew
By Audrey Becker, The Carroll Times

Archbishop Carroll offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities, ranging from Game Club to football, but one sport that seems to fly under the radar is crew. Crew, also known as competitive rowing, is a sport that focuses on strength, unity, and willpower. The main goal is to propel a boat through the water, using oars, past a certain distance as quickly as possible. In Carroll’s case, each boat takes either four or eight people to row, although there are other types of boats such as a double (two rowers) or a single (one rower) and, while individual performance is important, the best crew teams work in unison. Team members are not limited to the role of rowing, though, as there is another important member in each team’s success; a coxswain (pronounced cox-en). While a coxswain’s job doesn’t involve the physical strain of rowing, the role is just as important; a coxswain acts as the “director” of the boat, making calls of when to put more pressure into the stroke and how high the stroke rate should be, and steering the boat as it advances down the course.
Recently, the scenery has changed in the locker room, as former coach Bill Gennaro stepped down from his position with the team, and his brother, Steve Gennaro, took over as head coach. Coach Steve had a fruitful career as a rower in high school at St. Joe’s Prep, where his team went undefeated in his junior year, earning a trip to Youth Nationals, and at the collegiate level, where his Temple Owls team won the Dad Vail Regatta, setting a course record, and earning an invitation to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England. He hopes to coach Carroll to similar levels, using his first season as a “big adjustment period to set ourselves up for success.” Gennaro believes that his nine years as a rower have had the largest impact upon his character, and that while the sport is intensely physical, it is a great way to learn mental toughness and how to work as a group to reach a common goal.  Think crew might be for you? Talk to Bill, Coach Steve, or any crew member, and maybe come spring you will find yourself rowing the Schuylkill!
