Don't Miss Sounds of the Season,
Archbishop Carroll's Band and Chorus Christmas Concert!
Archbishop Carroll's fall musical, White Christmas, a smashing success!
Written by Megan Rayner, '22

Carroll got into quite the festive mood last weekend while we hosted our fall musical, White Christmas !

White Christmas takes place in the 1950s and follows two fresh out of the army soldiers, Bob and Phil played by William Timothy and James Buentello, who have just hit mega-celebrity status from their song and dance numbers and the Hanes Sisters, Betty and Judy played by Jessia Flores and Sara Doorly, who are their Sister Act and subsequent love interests.

Their meeting results in them heading to Vermont and staying at an Inn owned by Bob and Phil’s General from the army, Walter Entwistle, who is swamped in bills. In a last-ditch effort to save the inn, they decide to host a show in the barn behind the inn. During one of the rehearsals for the show, the whole cast performs the song and dance number “Blue Skies”, choreographed by Carroll students Julia Cavanaugh, Ryan Holmes, Alexa Tarasca, and Sarah Hurd in addition to the choreographer and director. The concierge of the Vermont inn Martha Watson, played by Tori O’Donnell, especially shined with her extremely entertaining solo number “Let Me Sing.”

After a few misunderstandings between Bob and Betty, resulting in them to fall in, out, and then back into love, they host their show for the inn on Christmas. Bob and Phil both surprise General Waverly on Christmas with their whole platoon from the war. The show closes out with the cast singing the classic Christmas song “White Christmas” as snow gently falls behind them.

Sophomore Victoria Fallouh who joined ACTS just this year said, “everyone in the ACTS program worked very hard to put on a beautiful show. The cast, crew, pit and costume crew all spent endless hours perfecting every detail and it all paid off!”
Carroll inducts thirty students into National Honor Society
Archbishop Carroll inducted thirty students into the National Honor Society (NHS) last week. The ceremony took place on Thursday evening, November 11, 2019. The NHS inductees for the Class of 2020 and 2021 are: Erin Boyle ‘20, Bowen Chen ‘20, Jiaao Gong ‘20, Chi Li ‘20, Victoria Louis ‘20, Kyle Ly ‘20, Gianna Mehl ‘20, Jiayi Yang ’20, Judith Butler ‘21, Jacky Chen ‘21, Cecilia Cherico ‘21, Kayla DeMola ‘21, Grace DiMascio ‘21, Maria Englert ‘21, Juan Espinoza ‘21, Elizabeth Fry ‘21, Mirabelle Gallagher ‘21, Schuyler Gock ‘21, Robin Higgins ‘21, Sarah Hurd ‘21, Morgan McFarlan ‘21, Hailey Nord ‘21, Maria Organ ‘21, Nicole Pawelec ‘21, Sofia Petroccia ‘21, Theresa Pham ‘21, Ryan Sharkey ‘21, Sophia Spurio ‘21, Charles Wallgren ‘21, Michael Young ‘21.

The evening began with Principal Dr. Anchen Schultz welcoming all in attendance. Following a choral performance of Ave Maria, the NHS pins were blessed. NHS President Jason Abiuso ‘20 then gave a poignant speech about the resiliency of the Archbishop Carroll Community. “If you are sitting in this auditorium, it means that we fully believe you can be a light in the darkness. When other people are struggling, you can comfort them. When tragedy strikes, you can be strong for those who can’t. I am calling on each of you to be so much more than a first honors student. I am calling on you to serve your fellow classmates. I am calling on you to build your character and strength to be able to lead our community to a brighter tomorrow.”

Following the candle lighting ceremony, proclamation of new NHS members, roll call of the present NHS members, and the NHS pledge, Mrs. Lauren Mauger was introduced as the evening’s honored speaker. Mrs. Mauger also emphasized the importance of community. “To be a NHS member is not just about a title to place on a college resume, but a call to help your peers…show kindness to everyone, not just friends,” said Mauger.

The evening closed with President Francis Fox’s congratulations to all NHS inductees and optimism for a bright future. We welcome you to share in our congratulations!

Get to Know Your Rashes

Whether a rash itches or not is often an important clue to knowing what kind of rash you have. The following are common itchy rashes. Follow up with your dermatologist for a formal diagnosis and treatment plan.

1. Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder that is caused by changes in certain immune system cells that make them "fight" normal skin. Psoriasis produces thick, silvery scales on a red base that has a distinct border. It's commonly found on the knees, elbows, and scalp.

2. Pityriasis Rosea
Pityriasis rosea is a common rash that has a striking appearance. It starts with a "herald patch" -- a single, round/oval lesion that often occurs on the trunk. The rash then spreads along skin lines on the trunk. The rash is very itchy and lasts for 6 to 8 weeks.

3. Poison Ivy
Poison ivy, or rhus dermatitis, is caused by exposure to a resin called urushiol found on certain plants of the Rhus genus. These plants include poison ivy, oak, and sumac. This well-known rash starts out with blisters and redness on the exposed areas that spread on contact with the blisters. Poison ivy and other forms of irritant contact dermatitis are treated with topical steroids.

4. Chicken Pox
Chicken pox is a very itchy rash caused by the varicella virus. Since the development of a chicken pox vaccine, we don't see as much chicken pox in the United States compared to twenty years ago. Pregnant women with chicken pox may need treatment with special medications. Anyone who has been exposed to chicken pox (even if they were immunized) is at risk for developing shingles later in life.

5. Scabies
Scabies is a rash caused by a tiny mite that burrows under the skin. The rash is red, bumpy, and often located on wrists, between fingers, in armpits, and around the waistline. Scabies is treated with a lotion to kill the mite, but the rash can last up to a month.

6. Eczema
Eczema is an itchy rash that is closely related to allergies. It is also known as "the itch that rashes." The exact cause of eczema is not known, but it seems to be related to abnormalities in the epidermis that make the skin drier than normal and more sensitive to common chemicals. Eczema is diagnosed based on the presence of major and minor criteria. There is no cure for eczema, but its symptoms can be managed by lifestyle changes and medications.

7. Hives
Hives (urticaria) is a rash that can evolve and change in hours -- even minutes.
Hives are actually divided into acute hives (lasting less than 6 weeks) and chronic hives (lasting longer than 6 weeks). This distinction is important because chronic hives actually have some strange causes like pressure or water-contact.
The factors that can cause hives are numerous, and we often can't isolate one. The good news is that there are medications that can treat hives effectively.

8. Ringworm
Ringworm is a fungal infection that typically occurs on the body. The rash is typically round, red, raised, and scaly on the outside of the lesion. Ringworm can be effectively treated with oral or topical medications.

From Marple Friends & Neighbors Magazine:

We’re pleased to announce that the December Sproul Lanes Student of the Month is Archbishop John Carroll High School Senior Mike Volpe.

Mike is very deserving of this award: He’s a member of the National Honor Society, the Community Service Corps (CSC), Tri-M (the Music Honor Society; he’s Vice-President), and his school’s TV crew and baseball team. He’s also in Carroll’s Pep Band, Pit Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble, playing drums and all percussion instruments, which he has played since joining St. Anastasia’s school band in 5th grade.

He has also played baseball since age 5, in Marple Township’s Little League program, then the Babe Ruth and Legion Ball leagues. And he’s been on Carroll’s baseball team every year, and has umpired for MTLL's summer tournament teams.

Mike makes service a priority: He was an altar server at his church, and in high school, has participated in CSC events such as the annual MLK Day of Service and a summer trip with classmates to do home-remodeling for needy people in an out-of-state community.

Michael plans on studying Statistics and Data Analytics in college. He’s been accepted into the University of Pittsburgh’s Statistics program, and awaits decisions from several other schools including Penn State. Thanks, Mike, for your service to so many communities, and Congratulations on this award and for your many accomplishments!
