Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week
Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) is a one-of-a-kind summer program that offers in-coming high school juniors and seniors a unique and challenging opportunity to see what it is like to run their own business.

Participants will make up an "imaginary" management team where they will learn first-hand about the Free Enterprise System. Their task - turn their failing company into a financial success! They will develop their own marketing strategies, design a website and in essence, make all of the decisions that are demanded of real life company executives. All work and no fun--NO WAY! PFEW provides students with a chance like no other - to experience what it is like to live on a college campus.

To find out more about this this amazing program, Skype LIVE with PFEW next Monday, February 17th at 4:00pm!

2019 Noval Coronavirus (2019-nCOV)

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCOV) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

Learn more about 2019-nCOV, including signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment, on the CDC website here

At Archbishop Carroll the nurse has been been extra vigilant for the symptoms of 2019-nCOV, including sneezing, runny nose, fatigue, cough, fever, and a sore throat, particularly in students who have recently traveled out of the country. As always, Carroll’s custodial services will continue to disinfect all classroom and high-use surfaces regularly.

Carroll Legends Night Honors
Coach Paul Romanczuz
Tonight we honored Coach Paul Romanczuk '95 during Carroll’s Legend Night Series. This exciting event took place when the Patriots faced off against Archbishop Wood. Coach Romanczuk is the first alumnus in school history to have his number retired.

Coach Romanczuk graduated from Carroll as a standout forward in 1995 and went on to score 1,179 points at Penn. After spending a few years away from the game, Romanczuk returned to Carroll to continue to build one of the best teams in the Philadelphia Catholic League.

Romanczuk was the head coach of the Patriots for 15 seasons and with the program for 17. He started in 2001-02 as an assistant under former coach John "J.R." Roe.

As Carroll’s head coach, Romanczuk led the Patriot’s storied basketball program to the PIAA Class 3A state championship in 2009, the Catholic League’s first year in the PIAA; 10 straight trips to the state playoffs with runner-up finishes in 2013 and 2015; he was named Catholic League Coach of the Year in 2009, 2012, 2016; 10 consecutive 20-win seasons, and the Patriots made the Catholic League Final Four at the Palestra nine out of 10 seasons. Coach Romanczuk earned over 280 career wins at Archbishop Carroll.

Several players coached by Romanczuk have gone on to play in the NBA and Division I, most notably: Derrick Jones, Jr. ’15; Ryan Daly ‘16 (University of Delaware for two seasons; transferring to St. Joseph’s University); Ernest Aflakpui ’15 (Temple); Juan’ya Green ’11 (Niagara University, Hofstra University); D.J. Irving ’10 (Boston University), and Andre Wilburn ’09 (Delaware State University).

“Words cannot describe the impact that Coach Romanczuk has had on Archbishop Carroll and our student-athletes. His leadership from his days as a student throughout his career rank him among the very best coaches in the Philadelphia region. I could not have wished for a greater ambassador for the program,” said Carroll President Francis E. Fox ’77.
Marward Award Recipients
Congratulations to Hope Syron ‘20 and Erin Sweeney ‘20, who were recipients of the Markward Award last evening. Assistant Coach Erin Shields ’10 presented the seniors with the award.  Hope and Erin were selected for their dedication to the sport of basketball.

Additionally, 1973 graduates Fran Lynam and Joe Rogers were honored with the Player of the Past Award for their athletic achievements.  After graduating from Carroll, Joe Rogers went on to play for Villanova.  Joe also became an assistant coach for legendary coach Rolley Massimino, who won a national title in 1985.  Fran Lynam played for Lehigh University after graduating from Carroll.-

William H. “Billy” Markward was hired as Roman Catholic’s basketball coach in 1901, where he stayed until 1941. Born in Philadelphia in 1878, Markward was a basketball pioneer. He coached Roman for 41 years and won 20 league championships, and earned a national reputation. He was a groundbreaking advocate for women and African-Americans in the young sport.-

The Markward Memorial Basketball Club is an organization founded in Markward’s honor in 1947 after his passing.  Through its awards, the program has supported and enhanced high school and college basketball in the Philadelphia area tremendously.-

Congratulations to all those honored!
