Archbishop Carroll students participate in All Catholic Band Festival Concert

Some of the areas best high school musicians performed at the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s All-Catholic Band Concert on Sunday, February 23, 2020. The students performed under the direction of Dr. William Stowman, Professor of Trumpet and Chair of the Music Department of Messiah College.

Grace Varnum ‘20 and Liz Carpenter ‘20 received an award for being in the All-Catholic Band all four years of high school. “I’m incredibly proud of the work that Grace and Liz have put in and how they’ve represented the music program at such high levels. I’m looking forward to seeing where their music takes them in the future,” said Archbishop Carroll Music Director Zach Larimer.

Over twenty Philadelphia High Schools participated in the event, which included top youth instrumentalists from the Philadelphia region. From Archbishop Carroll, Bill Zhang played the Timpani; Aiden Mullarkey played the Alto Saxophone; Grace Varnum, Laura Carpenter, Ashley Sion and Walter Entwistle played the Clarinet; Mason Abney played the Trumpet; and Liz Carpenter and Mounif Fallough played the Flute.

“I enjoyed seeing our students perform with the best of the Archdiocese of Phialdelphia and the selection of music performed at the event. Congratulations to all the students who were selected for the concert,” added Mrs. Judy Owens, Archbishop Carroll Biology Teacher.

Congratulations to our Archbishop Carroll All-Catholic band members on this accomplishment!
Derrick Banks Jr. was selected to represent the Office for Black Catholics at the Archbishop’s Installation Mass yesterday.  Derrick and his father joined the delegation of the faithful selected to be presented to the archbishop. Archbishop Carroll Honors Convocation

On Tuesday, February 25th, sixty-nine distinguished Archbishop Carroll students were celebrated at the Honors Convocation.  These students are in the top 10% of their class academically.

Mrs. Audrey Bourgeois was the evenings Distinguished Educator and spoke to the audience about our talents and gifts.  “It is our obligation to take our gifts and to pass on the love that has been given to us. Whether you are acting on stage, building a house in Kentucky, giving your all out on the athletic field, tutoring a fellow student, dancing at PatrioThon, participating in a class discussion, or simplifying hanging out with your friends in the cafeteria, you are acting as Christ. You are making this place better each and every day by spreading the love of God.  You are the heartbeat of Carroll.  We are very proud of all of your big accomplishments as well as the little acts you do each and every day to make this school community the best it can be,” said Mrs. Bourgeois.

Congratulations to these students on their academic accomplishments.  We are very proud !

Minding Your Mind presents at
Archbishop Carroll
Students in Mr. Kevin Gallagher’s class heard from Timmy last week, a compelling speaker from Minding Your Mind. Minding Your Mind is dedicated to ending stigma and destructive behaviors associated with mental health issues, with a focus on prevention through education.

When in high school, Timmy went from an elite student-athlete to someone who was dependent on drugs and alcohol. This lifestyle was a series of bad decisions that ended with time in jail. Recovery put Timmy on a path that led him to graduate from college Summa Cum Laude and realize his dream of becoming an NCAA national champion in lacrosse.

Thank you to Mr. Gallagher for setting up this engaging lesson, and to Timmy for sharing his redemptive story.

Inside our Classrooms at Carroll
#CarrollClassroom
Mr. Gallagher & Mr. Lafferty, both Business Teachers at Carroll, conducted Junior Achievement Modules from the Junior Achievement of Delaware Valley. The Modules were over 7 classes and were completed in both 6th & 7th periods. The students learned about “Career Success” which is a 7 class module on what the job market looks like today, how to align your personal goals to the career you might want to pick, and finally the careers high school students might wish to pursue.

“Be Entrepreneurial” lets the student see the risks involved in being an entrepreneur. Additionally, the students get to develop a fictitious product and/or service and have to market this in front of their class. Business Ethics and Business Plan Development are addressed during this Module.
All the Junior Achievement booklets and class materials are given to Carroll to help facilitate the teaching of Junior Achievement. Students’ comments have been very positive since the class follows the learning objective of: “Tell Me and I will Forget, Show Me and I will Remember, Involve me and I will Understand.” The Modules have games and exercises which keep students active and engaged in the learning process. Product Development have been solar gadgets to Apps for your Smart phones.

The entire class operates on a “Team” teaching concept of learning. Many positive comments were received by the students involved like, “this team-based learning was fun. Involving myself in the games made me understand the concepts better.”

Thank you Mr. Lafferty and Mr. Gallagher, for bringing such fun and enlightening lessons to Carroll.

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week
Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) is a one-of-a-kind summer program that offers in-coming high school juniors and seniors a unique and challenging opportunity to see what it is like to run their own business.

Participants will make up an "imaginary" management team where they will learn first-hand about the Free Enterprise System. Their task - turn their failing company into a financial success! They will develop their own marketing strategies, design a website and in essence, make all of the decisions that are demanded of real life company executives. All work and no fun--NO WAY! PFEW provides students with a chance like no other - to experience what it is like to live on a college campus.

To find out more about this this amazing program, Skype LIVE with PFEW next Monday, February 17th at 4:00pm!
2019 Noval Coronavirus (2019-nCOV)

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCOV) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. Early on, many of the patients in the outbreak in Wuhan, China reportedly had some link to a large seafood and animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. However, a growing number of patients reportedly have not had exposure to animal markets, indicating person-to-person spread is occurring. At this time, it’s unclear how easily or sustainably this virus is spreading between people.

Learn more about 2019-nCOV, including signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment, on the CDC website here

At Archbishop Carroll the nurse has been been extra vigilant for the symptoms of 2019-nCOV, including sneezing, runny nose, fatigue, cough, fever, and a sore throat, particularly in students who have recently traveled out of the country. As always, Carroll’s custodial services will continue to disinfect all classroom and high-use surfaces regularly.

I will be participating in the Military Excellence Competition this spring in basic and trick drill. I have not held a billet yet, but I am hoping to become an India Company Assistant Squad Leader this fall. Outside of the battalion, I am a part of Campus Ministry as a Eucharistic Minister.
