Inside our Classrooms at Carroll
#CarrollClassroom
Carroll Students Design Daycare: Students in Mrs. Glowaczewski’s AP Psychology class worked in pairs to create a plan/ presentation for a new day care center for preschool-aged children.  Students thought about the important elements of a good day care center as well as what programs the center will have to contribute to the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial development of the students. Students developed a curriculum, physical plan, and answered questions regarding the management of the day care.
Mr. Gallagher’s Intro to Business class had a food truck festival on Thursday as their assessment on entrepreneurship.  They had to put together a business proposal/plan for investors, design a menu and model of their truck, and brought in a sample of their food they will be selling at their truck should they receive investing.

Faculty and staff served as potential business investors, interested in investing in a truck. “Investors” moved from truck to truck at the festival asking each group about their product, their plan, and tasting their food! They then determined which trucks they believed were sound businesses worthy of financial backing.

Anquan Hill, Dean Coleman-Newsome lead Archbishop Carroll past Devon Prep.
Article from The Philadelphia Inquirer,

Written by Phil Anastasia

The basketball was a blur — from Dayon Polk to Caleb Carter to Anquan Hill, who put an exclamation point on the sequence with a dunk.
“We love to move the ball,” Hill said after Archbishop Carroll’s 76-48 victory over visiting Devon Prep on Sunday in a Philadelphia Catholic League game. “If we’re selfish, we’re not going to be as good a team as we can be.”

Crisp ball movement on offense and feisty on-the-ball defense made the difference for Archbishop Carroll (9-1, 4-0 league), the No. 8 team in the Inquirer Top 10 rankings.

Hill, a 6-foot-8 junior who recently picked up a scholarship offer from St. Joseph’s, led the way with 22 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. He knocked down three three-pointers and threw down three dunks.

Basketball recruiting: Archbishop Carroll’s Anquan Hill picks up offer from St. Joseph’s
Anquan Hill is growing more and more comfortable in basketball’s two most extreme places: above the rim and beyond the arc.

That was clear in Archbishop Carroll’s victory last Sunday over Philadelphia Catholic League foe Devon Prep, as Hill threw down three dunks and knocked down three three-point jumpers.

“He’s where the game is going – position-less, 6-7, 6-8 athletes,” Archbishop Carroll coach Francis Bowe said.

Hill, a 6-8 junior swingman, had sparked the Patriots to a 9-1 overall record, including a 4-0 mark in PCL play, through Thursday. He was averaging 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds while shooting 52% from the field.

Carroll defeats Lansdale Catholic

Friday was a big day for the Patriots as they looked to advance to 3-0 in Philadelphia Catholic League play.
Archbishop Carroll’s boys varsity basketball team faced Lansdale Catholic, which dropped its first two games in league play to PCL powerhouses Roman Catholic and Neumann -Goretti. This was a big game for Carroll, as they would be without big man and Bryant commit Tairi Ketner because of an injury.

Carroll’s crew undertakes 2019-2020 season under new coach

By Audrey Becker '22, Carroll Times Writer

The scenery has changed in the Archbishop Carroll crew locker room, as William Gennaro, assistant principal for academic affairs, stepped down from his position as head coach, and his brother, Steve Gennaro, took over.

Coach Steve had a fruitful career as a rower in high school at St. Joe’s Prep, where his team went undefeated in his junior year, earning a trip to Youth Nationals, and at the collegiate level, where his Temple Owls team won the Dad Vail Regatta, setting a course record, and earning an invitation to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in England.

Coach Steve hopes to coach Carroll to similar levels, using his first season as a “big adjustment period to set ourselves up for success.” Coach Steve believes that his nine years as a rower have had the largest impact upon his character, and that while the sport is intensely physical, it is a great way to learn mental toughness and how to work as a group to reach a common goal.

Crew, also known as competitive rowing, is a sport that focuses on strength, unity, and willpower. The main goal is to propel a boat through the water, using oars, past a certain distance as quickly as possible. In Carroll’s case, each boat takes either four or eight people to row, although there are other types of boats such as a double (two rowers) or a single (one rower) and, while individual performance is important, the best crew teams work in unison.

Team members are not limited to the role of rowing, though, as there is another important member in each team’s success; a coxswain (pronounced cox-en). While a coxswain’s job doesn’t involve the physical strain of rowing, the role is just as important; a coxswain acts as the “director” of the boat, making calls of when to put more pressure into the stroke and how high the stroke rate should be, and steering the boat as it advances down the course.

Think crew might be for you? Talk to Mr. Gennaro, Coach Steve, or any crew member, and maybe come spring you will find yourself rowing the Schuylkill!

Coach Chuck Creighton honored during Carroll Legends Night Series
In December we celebrated Coach Chuck Creighton, former head coach of Archbishop Carroll’s Girls’ Basketball team during Carroll’s Legends Night series. Coach Creighton is pictured with his wife, Peggy, and his family, during our game against O’Hara.

Coach Creighton was named head coach of Archbishop Carroll’s Girls’ Basketball team during the 2007-2008 season. After a 19-8 debut, which included the second of six straight trips to the Philadelphia Catholic League final, Creighton led Carroll to its first State Title in his second year in command. This was the first season in which Catholic League schools were eligible to compete in the PIAA.

Since taking over as head coach, Creighton led the Patriots to the 2009 PIAA Class AAA Championship, the Catholic League’s first season in the PIAA, and the 2012 PIAA AAAA State Title. He also piloted the Patriots to three Philadelphia Catholic League Titles in 2009, 2010, 2012 and the 2011 PIAA Class AAAA final. Under his tenure, the Carroll program produced over 25 collegiate athletes and earned a number of individual honors.
Creighton lead the girls’ basketball team at Carroll from 2007-2015, and he coached his daughter, Meghan ’12, during her four years at Carroll.

Congratulations, Coach Creighton, on this well-deserved accomplishment!

100 Wrestling Wins
Last night, the Archbishop Carroll community celebrated Jack McQuaid and his 100th wrestling win!

Carroll President Frank Fox, Wrestling Coach Andrew Daley, and Athletic Director Thomas Quintois were thrilled to welcome Jack and his family back to Carroll.

In one of the most remarkable accomplishments by a student-athlete in the more than 50-year history of Archbishop John Carroll High School, wrestler Jack McQuaid earned his 100th match victory on Saturday, Feb. 16, when he pinned an opponent from Father Judge High School during a match at St. Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia. “We are extremely proud of Jack’s accomplishment of 100 wins,” said Carroll Athletic Director Thomas Quintois.

“This is a monumental achievement for Jack and will be recognized in our gym for a lifetime. On behalf of the Archbishop Carroll community, we thank Jack and his family for his years of dedication and passion to our school and the sport of wrestling.” “Jack McQuaid was born to wrestle,” said Carroll President Francis E. Fox. “His natural abilities combined with his determination and discipline for the sport has made him one of Carroll’s all-time great wrestlers.  The school could not be prouder of Jack's 100th victory accomplishment.”
