Seniors travel to Broadway for
Dear Evan Hansen
|
|
By Mrs. Courtney Peters, English Faculty
It was an exciting day for seniors at Archbishop Carroll, as 74 students traveled to New York City, where they experienced St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Times Square, enjoyed lunch at Planet Hollywood and then headed to the Music Box Theatre to see the Broadway hit musical,
Dear Evan Hansen
.
Dear Evan Hansen
tackles modern day issues, the desire to fit in, and a lie that snowballs out-of-control. When asked about the relevancy of
Dear Evan Hansen
, Emily Elliot noted that the play “parallels our own high school experience. It can be hard to fit in.” Touching on challenging topics, the relationship teens have with their parents, loneliness, family, death, and growing up, the students found
Dear Evan Hansen
to be thought provoking and relevant.

Carroll Girls Basketball triumph means another pizza party for Shields family
DelCo Times -
The second half wasn’t four minutes old Monday night (Feb. 25), when Renie and Erin Shields got together for a mother-daughter talk.
It wasn’t one of those dramatic heart-to-hearts you see only on the big screen.
No, this was too real. Archbishop Carroll had just given up eight straight points and, for the first time, the lead in its Catholic League championship game with Archbishop Wood Monday, Feb. 25, at the Palestra.
Renie, the head coach, called time, stood up and looked at Erin. Joining them were assistants Leanne Ockenden and Nora McGeever. The theme was composure. And partly because the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, the Patriots listened.
It took a little longer than most Carroll games, the contest going to overtime. But the result was, let’s just say, so Shields.
The Patriots defeated Wood, 48-42, giving the Shields women a share of five Catholic League championships, including daughters Kerri and Shannon Shields. Yes, a Shields girl has helped cut the nets after Patriots league titles in 2007 (Kerri and Erin), 2009 (Erin, Kerri and Shannon), 2010 (Erin and Shannon), 2012 (Shannon) and now 2019 (Renie and Erin).

This medal will shine brighter than all the others
By Carol Kehoe Rogers,
The Times Herald
It was a sports writer’s dream scenario. I know this to be true because, well, I was a sports writer for the first half of my career. And this story would have written itself. It’s the classic story of a first-year team taking on the veterans – titans of the tournament – and winning. The story of a group of kids coming together under unique circumstances and forming a bond that is strong enough to carry them through to the gold medal. And to a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) state playoff berth.
Hollywood churned out a ton of movies with the same plot, same lovable characters, same upset ending – the Cinderella story.
And who doesn’t love an underdog? I certainly do.

College Information Night
College Information Night will be held on Tuesday, March 19, at 7 p.m., in the Library. There will be an informational panel from Cabrini University, Delaware County Community College, Penn State University, University of the Sciences and Widener University to answer any questions. Juniors and their parents are encouraged to attend, but the information night is open to all students and their families.
Course Selection Advice
As we begin to prepare for course selection for the 2019-2020 school year, the Guidance Department would like to remind students to be mindful of their future goals in choosing classes.
- Colleges look at the rigor of the courses taken over all four years. Senior year counts as well. Please be sure to maintain an appropriate rigor every year. More competitive colleges desire more honors and advanced placement classes as well as a strong GPA.
- We advise students to contact the colleges in which they are interested to find out what coursework they require/recommend for acceptance to their school and chosen program. Some majors have additional coursework requirements than the college itself. Sites, such as www.colllegeboard.org and www.collegedata.com, can also be helpful in determining college requirements, although the college admissions offices will have the most accurate information. Sites, such as https://www.bls.gov/ooh/, provide information regarding careers and the education needed for those occupations.
- Most colleges only require two years of a world language. Some of the more competitive schools require three years of a world language. An additional year of a language beyond the requirement may positively influence the admissions process if the student does well in the course.
- We strongly recommend that students keep in mind that most colleges require at least one semester of math in college. Students should consider taking math senior year to maintain their math skills in preparation for their college math course. Some majors require higher level math classes, such as calculus. Students may consider selecting a math course senior year to prepare for the math level required in college. This may prevent the student from needing to take additional prerequisites at the college level to prepare for the required college math course for the major, or at least reduce the number of prerequisite courses.
- Students planning to play sports in college need to consider NCAA requirements. Information may be obtained from Mr. Lynam in guidance or from the NCAA eligibility website. Students must meet the minimum core GPA to be eligible to play Division I and Division II sports. A core GPA only includes approved courses in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Language.
