Archbishop Carroll Earns
Middle States Re-Accreditation
The Middle States Association Commission on Secondary Schools has announced that Archbishop John Carroll High School earned re-accreditation , the gold standard for measuring and advancing school improvement. Accreditation is a multifaceted process that schools voluntarily use to demonstrate they are meeting a defined set of performance standards. The accreditation process helps schools to continue to grow and improve.

Carroll is “to be commended for their commitment to providing students with the best education possible," said Lisa Marie McCauley, Ed.D., president of the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. "The Middle States accreditation process is built around planning for the future and continuous school improvement.”

Archbishop John Carroll High School’s mission permeated every aspect of the Middle States committee’s visit to the hilltop. Academically, Carroll received glowing reviews. Carroll teachers use data from learning studies to improve their teaching techniques and recent Whiteboards and Chromebook technology upgrades are being used in the classroom. In summary, the committee noted that the teachers showed a commitment to using data to improve student learning.

The committee spoke directly to students, praising the abundance of opportunities to grow in faith, including Kairos retreats, daily mass, student-led prayer at lunch, service projects, and the evening Genesis program. Additionally, St. Katherine’s and Best Buddies Programs create friendships, opportunities for leadership experience, and the growth of empathy and love. Describing the school as a family that assures a personalized and individualized high-quality education for each child, the committee found Carroll to be a “true community of caring.”

Contributions from our Board of Education and staff, community members, and students who participated in the Middle States re-accreditation process were critical and meaningful to the successful re-accreditation and continued growth of Archbishop John Carroll High School.

A job well done by our Carroll community!
Inside our Classrooms at Carroll
#CarrollClassroom
Mrs. Cahill’s Environmental Science class surveyed Archbishop Carroll’s campus for Spotted Lanternflies.  Unfortunately, our campus has quite a few. Students in Mrs. Cahill’s class then created posters to inform the community of these critters, and what to do if you see one!

The Spotted Lanternfly causes serious damage in trees including oozing sap, wilting, leaf curling, and tree dieback. In addition to tree damage, when spotted lanternflies feed, they excrete a sugary substance, called honeydew, that encourages the growth of black sooty mold. This mold is harmless to people, however it causes damage to plants.

In addition to damaging trees and affecting quality of life, the Spotted Lanternfly is a huge threat to Pennsylvania agriculture industry. They threaten billions of economic impact and hundreds of thousands of jobs for those in the grapes, apple, hops, and hardwood industries.

If you see spotted lantern flies in your area, visit  https://services.agriculture.pa.gov/SLFReport/ or call 1-888-4BADFLY.

But most importantly, kill the big red bugs!
Students in Ms. Bacalou’s French 2 class completed a Fashion and Us Project: La Mode Et Nous.  Students chose between 7 different project options (Fashion Consultant, Fashion magazine Article, Fashion Magazine, What Not to Wear, a Game, PowerPoint or Dialogue) and then presented to the class.

Featured Teacher: Mr. Scanlan
US Government, Honors and AP Human Geography and American History
Why did you want to be a teacher? “I love working with kids, helping them mature and grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.”

Why do you love teaching your subject? “In today's world of ever expanding globalization it is so important to learn about the history, culture, and beliefs of past and present people and civilizations.”

What is your favorite lesson? “In the beginning of my Human Geography unit on culture we talk about the importance of language. The students take a ten question pre-quiz where I speak different languages and they have to try and guess what language it is. I convince them I'm actually a spy! Afterwards we discuss English words that are derived from those various languages.”

What is your goal as an educator? “I want to teach my students that learning is happening all the time. You can learn from people, books, magazines, movies, television, music, travel, etc. Always keep your mind open. Everything is a learning experience.”

Clubs and Activities: Mr. Scanlan has served as a Kairos retreat leader and he is also coach of the Bocce team. Additionally, he has hosted the Trivia Contest and Mr. Patriot!

Fun Facts: Mr. Scanlan went skydiving in Switzerland, has been inside a volcano, and has petted a cheetah and lions. He also used to be able to ride a unicycle!
Featured Teacher: Ms. Bacalou
French
Why did you want to be a teacher? “When I was a teenager, I wanted to be a surgeon, but it appeared that Math and Science were not my best subjects. I was much better at French, History, Philosophy and World Languages. So, I turned to literary studies. Teaching seemed to be the best option, as I believe that education is the key answer to many global issues.”

Why do you love teaching your subject? “Back in France, I was an English teacher of middle and high school. Since moving abroad, I have started teaching my mother tongue language. I love sharing French and European cultures. I am able to compare it with the different countries I have lived in so far. I am passionate about languages, as they can be so influential. But most importantly, they help connect us to other people and cultures.”

What is your goal as an educator? "As an educator, I try to create lessons that engage all learners by applying a variety of teaching methods and skills, by using new IT which presents unique opportunities to help each student achieve success. In my class, I try to form cooperative learning groups, organize different projects to make my students feel like partners and help each other. I am passionate about teaching students and forging relationships with them that help build a sense of confidence and enable them to grow both as learners and future citizens."
