Archbishop Carroll Senior Ring Mass

On September 17 Archbishop Carroll celebrated the Class of 2021 Ring Mass. Father Cavara discussed the unbreakable bond between the Class of 2021 and their important role as symbols of hope and light as the world regains normalcy this year. As Fr. Cavara added, they in many ways represent the “fight back” and we could not be prouder of the Class of 2021.
Archbishop Carroll Celebrates Community Mass

We are thankful for Father Mark Cavara, who organized our first Mass as a community in September. It was a very special experience.  Father Cavara celebrated Mass in the Carroll chapel with students.  Additionally, our students on campus were able to watch the Mass via Zoom in their classroom, while our virtual students watched Mass from home.   Eucharistic ministers delivered communion to the classrooms, so students were able to safely receive communion.  Thank you, Father Cavara, for orchestrating this special experience for our community!

Carroll Scrip Program
My name is Sharon Corbett and I run the Scrip Program at Carroll. It helps families save on tuition just by doing your everyday shopping. Instead of paying for everyday purchases with cash, check, or credit card, you use scrip. The Scrip Program saved Carroll families over $10,000 on their tuition bills.

There is a list of participating retailers on www.shopwithscrip.com. Retailers offer a percentage of the sale as a rebate that can be credited to your tuition.  Scrip comes in three ways: Gift cards (plastic), ScripNow (egift cards that can be downloaded to your phone or computer) and ReLoad option to existing plastic cards previously purchased through Shop with Scrip. Carroll gives 90% of all rebates back to the parents to use as tuition savings.
Parents can join now by going to www.shopwithscrip.com and click Join a Program. You will need Carroll’s Enrollment Code: 5F56DE9A823. This links you to Carroll’s Program. Follow the instructions and you will be ready to go. The easiest way to use the program especially when you are on the go is to download the mobile app RaiseRight. Just download the app on the phone and you can manage all your scrip from there. You can link your bank account and/or credit card and buy your scrip right in the store. It is safe and secure and very easy to use.
New to the program that will begin at the end of October is parents will be able to have plastic cards shipped directly to their house. This will make it easy for parents to get their scrip whether it is electronic or plastic. It will be so accessible for you to use. You can also have family members sign up to help you with your savings.
Shop with Scrip has over 700 vendors to choose from which include groceries, restaurants, gas, coffee, fashion stores, entertainment, travel and more. Parents receive 90% of the rebate given by the vendor! Rebates vary by vendor.
Some retailers that are available that parents use all the time are Giant, Acme, ShopRite, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Panera, Chipotle, Lowes and Home Depot. Not all retailers offer electronic scrip, some only offer plastic. Every time you shop at these locations (just to name a few) and pay with scrip, you will receive a rebate that will be credited to your tuition. Rebates are accumulated and are usually credited on a quarterly basis.
For example, you are at Bed, Bath & Beyond and your cart has $100 worth of merchandise you are going to buy, just use the app on your phone buy $100 scrip for Bed, Bath & Beyond pay your bill using the scrip and you will save $6.30 on your tuition. It is that easy.
After you enroll, you will receive more information to help you save the most money from your tuition.

Student council is ready and raring to go
By Nicholas Volpe '21
Carroll Times Staff Writer

Although this year is different from previous ones, student council President Sofia Petroccia has plans to make it as fun as possible by adding social distancing-compatible events, which will give students things to look forward to.

“This is a time when it can be hard for people to maintain our Carroll pride,” Petroccia said. “However, I want to see our school be as patriotic as ever and to keep the spirit alive!”

Petroccia said the student council board of directors has so much talent and Patriot pride. She said she is confident they will work well with each other and make it a great year.

Some goals Vice President Jason “JT” McNally has are to get students involved in extracurricular activities as much as possible and to keep them safe and happy and healthy.

“I hope to see more familiar faces at different events and to make sure people know not to be afraid to get involved,” said McNally.

McNally said he is very confident that the student council will accomplish its goals even with the limitations it has and the circumstances that it is in.

Student council Secretary Michael Young echoed his colleagues’ sentiments. “I personally want everyone to make the most out of this year,” Young said.

“Hopefully,, everyone, including myself, can make this year an opportunity to continue with our goals instead of just a year to get it over with.”

Young said he plans to help out wherever he can, whether it’s a virtual open house or in-school events.
Congratulations to Joseph Bushner, who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout on August 26th.  Only 7% of Scouts earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

His Eagle Scout project was the clean up and renovation of Tremont Cemetery in Norristown.  The cemetery is known to be the first integrated cemetery in the area.  Many US Veterans are buried at Tremont cemetery, including a soldier from 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the soldiers who were memorialized in the movie Glory (headstone is in the picture). Awesome job, Joseph!
Fall sports are back for Carroll and the PCL
By: Caleb Carter '21
Carroll Times Writer

Fall sports are back!!! On Sept. 25, everyone in the Philadelphia Catholic League got blessed with some great news: All fall sports would resume this season.

This reverses the decision released on Aug. 24, when the Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced that all 17 Archdiocesan high schools in the five-county Philadelphia region would opt out of fall sports for the 2020-21 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the latest statement, Superintendent Sister Maureen L. McDermott, wrote: “We are pleased to share that the time has come to allow the resumption of interscholastic athletic competition while continuing to strictly follow health and safety guidelines.”

Players are excited because they had believed they might not put on those pads, or touch that field, or get on the court until late spring, or maybe even never again.

Senior Malachi Hansen, Carroll’s starting safety, said he was “beyond hype for this season.” He added: “Thinking my senior season could possibly just not happen was heartbreaking, but when Coach told us we’d have a season starting next month, I had no time to even be excited, I was just ready to get to work.”

In addition, Hansen said: “It’s good for the mental health of athletes.”
Some students’ only way of getting through school is the anticipation of practice or a game at the end of the day. Without their sport, they had no motivation and felt purposeless. Hansen said, “With sports back, we have a reason again.”

Kevin Mahady, a senior on the varsity soccer team, has a great outlook on the return of fall sports.

Mahady said “I’m so excited man. Can’t wait to get back to being dirty. The boys are absolutely buzzing.”
