Teacher of the Month: Mrs. Alice Dugan
About Mrs. Dugan: Mrs. Dugan taught at St. Maria Goretti for three years, then Archbishop Carroll during 1976 and 1977. Through constriction, she went to COHS where she taught for thirty-five years. At COHS, she was Department Chair for twenty years as well as the Diocesan Math Curriculum Chair for sixteen years. Mrs. Dugan is now starting her ninth year at Carroll after her retirement in 2012.

About Mrs. Dugan’s Class: Mrs. Dugan is an AP Calculus teacher at Archbishop Carroll. She asks her student to work hard in class, but rest assured, it pays off in the end. The AP test scores of Mrs. Dugan’s students are impressive. Out of eleven students in Mrs. Dugan’s AP Calculus AB course, 5 students scored a “5,” 4 students scored a “4,” and 2 students scored “3.” Out of the 6 students enrolled in Mrs. Dugan’s AP Calculus BC course, 3 students scored a “5,” 2 students scored a “4,” and 1 students scored a “3.” Each course counts for 4 college credits.

What Mrs. Dugan’s students say: Julia Lundeen ’18 recalls what an incredible teacher Mrs. Dugan was to her during her time at Archbishop Carroll. “Mrs. Dugan’s genuine caring attitude toward all of her students was evident from the first day to the last. She celebrated all of our accomplishments, even if they were small. If we made mistakes, she would tell us with authority, but would then do everything possible to make sure we understood the concept, going forward. You had to bring your best to class every day, but it was always worth it. Mrs. Dugan was one of the best teachers I had at Carroll, and her class has helped me immensely in college.”

Thank you, Mrs. Dugan, for all that you do!
A Message from Nurse Lelario, RN, CSN
Take time to get a    flu vaccine !

The  Centers for Disease Control   recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against influenza and its potentially serious complications.  Flu vaccination can    reduce flu illnesses, doctors’ visits, and missed work and school due to flu   , as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations.

Take    everyday preventive actions   to stop the spread of germs:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • After using a tissue, throw it in the trash and wash your hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germ
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.
  • School policy states students must stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. Fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine before returning to school.
  • Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor prescribes them.

SENIORS:    You must turn in your meningitis vaccine form by Wednesday, Sept. 19, or you will not be allowed to attend school starting Thursday, Sept. 20.

JUNIORS and FRESHMEN   : Please bring your physical form to the nurses office by Monday, Oct. 1.

Any hardships with turning in the health forms, please contact    [email protected]

Student-Athlete of the Week 9/16:
Carly Bateman '20 Carroll Field Hockey
What Coach Elisio says about Carly: “Carly is an all-around top-notch player and person. Her vibrant personality and unwavering work ethic both in the classroom and on the field are admirable. Carly’s #1 priority on the team is to support her teammates and help them grow. Just the other day I pulled up to practice and she was out on the field with a player helping them strengthen their hockey skills. No one asked her to help that player on her own time...she just did it! She is a natural-born leader who I have had the honor of watching play and flourish over the past 4 years into one of the most relentless and skilled players I have ever seen in the game of hockey. Carly was recently named captain by her teammates which is an ode to how much they look up to her."

Grade School:   St. Mary Magdalen School

College Offers & Plans: Carly was recruited by La Salle University, Lafayette, Old Dominion, Iowa, Albany State, and Catholic U. She will be attending La Salle University to play field hockey and study nursing next fall.

Why Carly Chose Carroll: "I chose Carroll because of the community, the academics, the great field hockey tradition and to further my Catholic education."

Favorite Field Hockey Memory: “My favorite field hockey memory would be winning the PCL Championship with my team last year. All of the hours spent working on and off the field had paid off!”

Advice to freshmen playing your sport: “I would advise freshman to not take their time for granted. My past four years have flown by and I wish I could have another year with my teammates. I would also say to never become discouraged if you mess up but use it to develop as a player.”
Student-Athlete of the Week 9/23:
Bella Grube '20 Carroll Soccer
What Coach Quintois says about Bella: “It’s both an honor and a privilege to coach Bella Grube. She is a driven leader who excels on the field and off the field. In addition, she is the consummate team player always putting the team over herself. Bella serves as our team captain and is on pace to have a great senior year and lead our program to heights."

Why Bella Chose Carroll: “I chose Carroll because everyone was so welcoming and friendly. I was also able to see how happy my sister was at Carroll, which only supported my decision to come here.”

College Plans: Bella plans to study Business next year in college.

Favorite Soccer Memory: “One of my favorite soccer memories was recently when we beat O’Hara 1-0. After ending the game in a tie last year, we were determined to beat them this year and we did! It was so exciting to win our second PCL game of the season and see that our hard work this year paid off.”

Advice to freshmen soccer players: “My advice to freshmen soccer players is to work hard and stay focused, both on and off the field. If you stay focused and give it your all, especially when you don’t want to, the results will be rewarding.”

NBA Player Derrick Jones '15
Returns to Carroll
Derrick Jones '15 returned to campus on Saturday, September 12, to be interviewed by the Miami Heat and Fox News Miami about his upbringing and the impact Carroll had on his journey. While at Carroll, Derrick met with Coach Paul Romanczuk '95. Coach Romanczuk has served 14 seasons as the Head Boys' Basketball Coach amassing more program wins than anyone in Carroll's history. Derrick also met with Joe DeBarberie '73, co-chair of Carroll's Hall of Fame Committee, and Archbishop Carroll President Frank Fox '77.
Alumna Spotlight: Juliana Wallgren '18
Juliana Wallgren, a 2018 graduate of Archbishop Carroll, is doing big things at Drexel. Inspired by Mrs. Cahill’s AP Environmental Science class and “every history course [she] took at Carroll,” Juliana is studying Electrical Engineering with a minor in both Environmental Studies and History. Entering her sophomore year, she will begin her six-month co-op at PECO.

Juliana is involved in Drexel’s Newman Catholic Community and is a Drexel Student Ambassador because she “loved [her] time as an ambassador at Carroll.”

Juliana is a member of the Electrical and Women’s Professional Engineering Societies (IEEE & SWE). This past summer, she took part in a summer research program hosted by the University where she studied early 19th-century publishing in Philadelphia.

“Academically, Carroll helped build a strong foundation while providing opportunities to branch out and try new things and inspired both of my minors. I felt equipped to tackle a challenging and fast-paced curriculum, and it also made me hungry to learn everything I can! Carroll allowed me to explore my interests through extracurriculars, which made joining clubs and activities in college easy and something I knew I wanted to do. From this, I am able to combine my passions. Also, I owe a huge part of my faith to Carroll. I was so on fire for my faith when I arrived on campus that I’m heavily involved in Newman and it’s become a home for me!”

Although we miss Juliana, we love watching her soar at Drexel! Carroll students take her advice and the advice of Father Speziale - explore clubs and activities and allow Carroll to make you hungry for more in life! Use your time with us to find your  #PatriotPassions  and then set the world on fire!
