The Pavilion at Lemay is Now Open!

Lemay residents now have a new place to gather, have fun and get healthy. The Pavilion at Lemay, located in Jefferson Barracks Park, officially opened its doors on May 29. This much anticipated project is the result of community input, hard work and creative problem solving.

During the initial investigation period, the input from Lemay residents demonstrated that a new recreation facility was a top priority for the neighborhood. Though Pinnacle Entertainment (owner of River City Casino) had contributed $5 million towards the center, the type of facility that was being requested would cost a lot more. The Port Authority decided to bond funds it was receiving from leasing the former National Lead site to Pinnacle in order to raise the capital needed to build a more expensive community center with higher level of amenities. The Port Authority bonded $17.2 million, including $4.3 million to rebuild the North County Recreation Center's closed pool.

Pre-construction of the facility came with many surprises, including the need to move locations. Initially the community center was to be built at the north edge of Jefferson Barracks Park but further geotechnical testing showed that the cost of managing the sinkholes would take away from the facility itself. The Parks Department offered the Grant's Shelter site further into Jefferson Barracks Park as a way to develop the recreation center, pool, existing trails and athletic fields into one recreation complex to better serve all users.

The Pavilion at Lemay has been developed to meet the Lemay community's needs and exceed their expectations. This 42,000 square foot building offers a multi-purpose athletic center (MAC) for group sports and community events, a walking track, cardio and weight fitness machines, group exercise classes, locker rooms, and community rooms available for events and meetings. The outdoor aquatic center offers a lap pool, a lazy river, spray pads, "wet decks" for lounging and a tot structure for playing. On the pool deck, visitors will also find a 12' deep "plunge pool" complete with a climbing wall, tube slide, spring board and diving platform.

For more information and pricing, visit our website at www.stlouisco.com/parks/Lemay or call (314) 615-8877.

Featured Trail
The Fort Belle Fontaine trail at Fort Belle Fontaine Park is a 3 mile-loop moderate trail made of gravel treadway. This trail is great for hikers and bikers and is also marked for cross country skiing.

After checking in at the security hut, the trail can be accessed on the first road to branch off to the left from the main entrance park road.

Interpretive signs are placed along the 3 mile trail providing natural history as well as a history lesson for the trail user.

The trail begins within the 35 acre re-constructed tall grass prairie. Just like Sioux Passage Park, Fort Belle Fontaine was originally part of the tall grass prairie belt of
St. Louis County at the time of European settlement. Nearly 50,000 acres of prairie, mostly in North County existed in
St. Louis County. Woodlands would have been restricted to the steep slopes, and the waterways of the Missouri River and Coldwater Creek. This rolling topography is an ideal setting for prairie establishment.

As you top the small rise the grandeur of the prairie opens. Here it is possible to imagine what this part of the County looked like 200 years ago. Four native prairie grasses, big bluestem, Indian grass, little bluestem and side-oats grama were planted on the site with over 25 different species of wildflowers. These grasses are considered warm season grasses and produce the most growth during the summer months. They are deep rooted and as a result are drought resistant. They also grow in clumps which is a great benefit to native wildlife. Big bluestem and Indian grass can reach 6 feet in height.

Portions of the prairie are maintained by fire each year. With the trail dividing the prairie one side is burned every year. Burning recycles nutrients, controls woody invasion and stimulates the growth of prairie grasses and wildflowers. Without fire prairie in this part of Missouri will be out competed by the surrounding woodland and over time disappear. Native Americans realized the benefit of fire early on knowing that fire would bring back the prairie grasses and the buffalo. In addition Indians used fire to drive game; as a means of protecting their village; and to ease travel. Generally fire was used in the fall after the plants went dormant.

From the high point of the prairie the trail begins to drop down to the sinkhole marsh. This natural depression was enhanced by the Department to create a shallow wetland. Nearly 30 species of wetland plants have been planted along the wetland shore as a result of a grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Over 90% of Missouri's wetlands at the time of European settlement have been destroyed due to urbanization, channelization of streams and farming practices. Wetlands are important in providing unique habitat for plants and wildlife. They also benefit us by purifying and filtering water; provide flood water storage and ground water recharge. This is a wonderful area to view seasonal herons and egrets.

During the summer months swallows can be seen collecting insects as they swoop above the wetland. As the trail leaves the prairie it begins a rather steep descend to the Coldwater Creek Valley. At the bottom of the hill are some of the old ruins from the recreation days of the 1930's.

Continuing on the trail there are some great views of the creek. Coldwater Creek is one of the larger creeks in the County. The exposed bedrock, and the creek riffles remind the visitor of a stream from the Ozarks. Over the eons the creek has carved down the bedrock wearing away the rock and exposing the various layers of limestone and shale. At the mouth of the creek lies the spring mentioned in the Lewis & Clark writings. The spring coming out of a small cave is only visible when the Missouri River is low or near normal. Near the spring is where the Corps of Discovery spent their first night on their epic journey to the Pacific Ocean. An interpretive sign commemorates this special occasion.

Continuing on along the trail are some other ruins from the 1930's. The rock structures give the area an interesting appearance. Bath houses, patio, picnic sites, and comfort stations can be found along the trail. Then of course one of the last ruins to see is the "Grand Staircase." The staircase was built by the WPA and has been repaired over the years by the Parks Department. This last section of trail does provide access to the Missouri River for fishing or just watching the river flow past. As you climb up from the river valley you will pass some additional stone walls on the right of the trail again from the 1930's. At the top of the hill follow the road back around to the start of the trail at the parking lot.
