Legislative Alert!

The Senate State Government Committee may schedule a vote on the Pennsylvania Museum Preservation Act (SB 588) as early as next week!
This bill, introduced by Senator Pat Browne and Senator Jay Costa, would provide a consistent source of funding to assist Pennsylvania museums that do not receive general operating support from other state sources. The Pennsylvania Museum Preservation Act frames out a funding program that is streamlined, allows for operating support and multi-year funding, and  identifies eligible museums and organizations using national standards, definitions, and markers of performance.

Funds would be distributed by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) based on a percentage of the operating budget for each museum.
This is a unique opportunity to change the way Pennsylvania funds museums.
Please contact the members of the Senate State Government Committee NOW to ask them to vote for SB 588 when it is before the Committee.
We are providing two sample e-mails that you can adapt to your use (below).

We have also provided a list of the e-mail addresses for the Senators and their Chiefs-of-staff (below).
Please send your note to both the Senator and the Chief of Staff to make sure that it reaches his or her desk.

Thanks for your continued efforts.

"On behalf of the (insert your organization's name here) I am asking for your support of SB 588, Senator Browne and Senator Costa's PA Museum Preservation Act. (Insert some information about your organization and its impact on your community)
Museums and other arts and cultural institutions play an important role in our communities and in the well-being of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. SB 588 provides an efficient, predictable source of funding for museums and community facilities. This would protect thousands of jobs in the tourism industry and would enhance the quality of life throughout the Commonwealth.
Thank you for supporting this important bill.

"Tourism is the second largest industry in Pennsylvania. For too long, state funding for museums and cultural facilities has been hit-or-miss and organizations like (insert your organization's name here) have been struggling to survive.
SB 588, the Museum Preservation Act, would provide a consistent source of funding for museums and other vital community facilities. This means that we can preserve thousands of jobs in tourism - Pennsylvania's second largest industry - and enhance the quality of life in the state. I ask for your strong support for this legislation when it is considered by the State Government Committee and by the full Senate."
