Keeping the Heartbeat of Our Community Strong

A Season for Reflection, Resilience, and Renewal

As the year draws to a close, the holiday season surrounds us with the joys that bind us together: connection, gratitude, and hope. Though this year has brought its challenges, it has also revealed the remarkable strength, courage, and compassion all around us.

Recently, I had the joy of celebrating Family and Friends Day at Wawa’s grand opening in Sandston, Virginia. I even got to share a fun moment with Wally Goose! Events like these are more than just celebrations—they are reminders of the simple, powerful ways communities come together to lift one another up. Moments of connection, laughter, and shared joy mirror the resilience and care we see every day in our schools, neighborhoods, and homes.

I have witnessed countless acts of quiet bravery—educators going the extra mile for their students, families advocating fiercely for their children, neighbors offering kindness and support. These moments show that even in difficult times, our shared values and commitment glow with resilience.

The holidays invite us to pause—not to forget the trials we have faced, but to celebrate the growth, wisdom, and light they have brought into our lives. Let us take this time to rest, reconnect, and cherish the warmth that surrounds us.

May your season be wrapped in peace, filled with joy, laughter, and inspiration, and may the coming year radiate with new possibilities, hope, and endless promise.

Onward together,

ONWARD TO SOLUTIONS

Celebrating Progress and Building a Better Future in Virginia Schools

Virginia’s new accountability framework and school ratings are in, and the message is clear: our schools are making a difference—whether On Track, Off Track, or Distinguished—even as the standards continue to shift. These changes make things challenging. It’s like kicking a field goal while the goalposts move. Yet, educators and staff keep scoring for kids every day.

Here’s how we move onward to solutions:

  • Celebrate growth, not just test scores: How far a student has come matters more than a single snapshot.

  • Invest in the whole child and the school: Social-emotional skills, enrichment, and opportunity fuel lifelong success. Schools also need strong infrastructure — reliable HVAC, safe facilities, and learning environments that support achievement.

  • Support educators and staff: Better pay, professional growth, and resources keep schools strong.

  • What happens in schools often reflects the realities of the neighborhoods they serve. Love alone is not enough — schools need development that values communities, not just deep pockets.

  • Stabilize standards & share what works: Consistency helps schools plan, and local innovations can inspire breakthroughs statewide.

Remember: Virginia new ratings are a checkpoint, not the final measure of success. Let’s celebrate progress, stay encouraged, and keep moving onward to solutions — because when growth, support, and heart lead the way, that’s how no student gets left behind.
