Terry Lindvall's "Media Manna: Religious Uses of Animation" appeared in an edited series on "Useful Animation" in animation studies 2.0. 

Mandy Reinig’s chapter "Risk Assessment and Management" was published in NAFSA's Guide to Education Abroad for Advisors and Administrators, which was edited by Margaret Wiedenhoeft, Ph.D. and Corrine Henke.

Taryn Myers published the article "What about being a feminist is protective? An examination of constructs related to feminist beliefs as moderators of the relationship between media awareness and thin-ideal internalization" in the journal Body Image
Eric Mazur's article "The SS Quanza, Jewish Refugees, and the Port of Hampton Roads, 1940" was published in the March issue of the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography (vol. 130, no. 1, pg. 39-78), a publication of the Virginia Historical Society.


M. Annette Clayton published an article in the February 2022 issue of Children & Schools (a peer-reviewed journal) titled "An Examination of the Context-Linked Influences on the Achievement Outcomes of African American Male High School Seniors."
Jennifer Slivka published a book review of Look! It's an Irish Woman Writer! Irish Literary Feminisms, 1970-2020, edited by Éilís Ní Dhuibhne in the latest issue of Estudios Irlandeses. Estudios Irlandeses is the scholarly journal of the Spanish Association for Irish Studies (AEDEI), which publishes essays, in either English or Spanish, which engage in a critical and original way with aspects of Irish literature, history, arts and the media.
President Scott D. Miller and Dr. Marylouise Fennell continue to collaborate as Executive Editors on the thought leadership series President to President. The 2021-2022 series is titled “The Vitality and Power of Higher Education,” and examines how colleges are approaching their missions with new vigor and re-examining their role in the community. In the seventh chapter, "The Cost of Higher Education's Pursuit of Status,” University of Mary Washington President Troy D. Paino, J.D., Ph.D., examines higher education’s obsession with the attainment of status. He details some of the consequences of prioritizing status above other values, describes the benefits of changing this way of thinking, and shares ideas for shifting focus to other priorities. President Miller's daily blog, Dialogue, can be found at prezscottmiller.blogspot.com.
PRESENTATIONS AND PANELS
Denise Wilkinson presented the session, "Engaging Students in a Socially Distanced Platform," at the Teaching Academic Success Skills National conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Additionally, as a Conference Advisory Committee member, she provided assistance at the registration table.

Benjamin Dobrin and April Christman gave a talk entitled "Knowing About Vaccinations'" to Zeta Phi Peta Sorority, Inc. discussing the history, importance, and relevance of vaccines in our modern age.

Mindy Gumpert facilitated a webinar titled "Morphology and Structured Word Inquiry" for the Virginia Joint Coalition of Learning Disabilities and Literacy, an organization she co-founded. Also, at the annual conference of the Virginia Council for Exceptional Children, Mindy introduced the keynote speaker and co-presented a session with members of the VACEC diversity committee.

Doug Kennedy testified as a fact witness in the Federal Court confirmation hearing of the Boy Scouts of America's bankruptcy. His testimony and cross-examination addressed trust distribution procedures, issues related to case resolution, claimant demographics, and the operation of the Tort Claimants Committee.

Alain Gabon presented a paper titled "The Nine Methods of New French Islamophobia" at the "Islamophobia in Post-Secular States" at the University of Alberta, Canada.

Stephen Hock gave a talk titled "Resistant Inaugural Poems of the Trump Era" as part of the panel "On Occasion: Eventful Poetries Then and Now" at the Northeast Modern Language Association conference in Baltimore.
Michelle Albert Vachris gave a public lecture on "Entrepreneurship in Scotch Whisky" at Southern Connecticut University March 31, 2022.

Ben Haller delivered "ἄνδρα μοι ἔννεπε, μοῦσα, ἀόρατον? Ralph Ellison and the Influence of Homers Odyssey on the Form of Invisible Man and on its Representation of Orality" at the annual meeting of CAMWS in Winston-Salem, NC. The paper presents work funded by a Mednick Grant Ben received to begin a book on Ralph Ellison's use Homer in "Invisible Man."

President Miller participated in a virtual panel discussion, "Working with an Investment Firm: Making Your ESG Intention Actionable," during the annual Higher Education Climate Leadership Summit along with representatives from the University of New Hampshire and VWU's oCIO from Brown Advisory on April 5. During this session, participants heard case studies outlining the relationship between endowment stakeholders and the investment firms they work with to develop and implement their ESG investing strategy. Dr. Miller discussed the environmentally friendly investment of VWU's full endowment and the mission of the Batten Honors College.
GRANTS

Mandy Reinig received a 2022 IIE American Passport Project grant that will enable VWU to provide grants to 25 Pell-eligible first-year VWU students to receive their passport.
OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Audrey Malagon was invited to the Mathematical Association of America headquarters in Washington, D.C. as part of a nationwide group of faculty brought together to discuss departmental and program reviews and advise the association on updating their processes.

Gabi Martorell became a member of the newly-appointed Task Force on Decolonizing Psychology for the Society of Teaching of Psychology. The goal of the task force is to develop, prepare and promote materials related to decolonizing psychology, with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion in course development and materials.

Mandy Reinig was named Volunteer of the Year with Habitat for Humanity South Hampton Roads.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

"Animals and Society," taught by Kathy Stolley, welcomed guest experts including those from our campus community. Kathy Ames and Turner presented on certified therapy dogs. Heather Campbell shared her and Hans' experience with wounded warriors and paralympians. Kathy Bartkus (retired) will also be presenting on VWU campus wildlife. (The picture in memory of Hans is from his final pre-pandemic visit.)
