Stephen Hock's essay "The Breakfast Club, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Riverdale's '80s Palimpsest" was published as a chapter in The '80s Resurrected: Essays on the Decade in Popular Culture Then and Now (McFarland).
Robert Ariel published a paper with Sarah K. Tauber titled "Emerging trends in research on self-regulated learning and implications for education: An introduction to the special issue." The paper is part of a special issue for the Journal of Intelligence edited by Sarah Tauber and Robert Ariel that is now available.

Kathy Merlock Jackson published her twelfth book, "This Shark, Swallow You Whole": Essays on the Cultural Influences of Jaws, coedited with Philip L. Simpson (McFarland & Company, 2023). It contains her essay, "Jaws, Quint's Talce, and the Scars of World War II," in which she argues how Quint's soliloquy elevates the film, making it a commentary on World War II.

Elizabeth Malcolm gave a presentation on Virginia Wesleyan University's recent sustainability initiatives to the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission Regional Environmental Committee.
Audrey Malagon was invited to present “Math at the Crossroads: Navigating Math Preparation for College" at the Just Equations national conference, The Mathematics of Opportunity: Advancing by Degrees. As MAA Chair of the Council on Teaching and Learning, she spoke on how undergraduate mathematics programs, high schools, and admissions offices can work together to ensure student success.
At the Election Verification Network Conference, Audrey Malagon and John Sebes, CTO of the OSET Institute, presented a panel "Recent Evaluations of Internet Voting and Electronic Ballot Return." In addition she was presented with the EVN Advocacy Award for her work ensuring statistically sound post election audits are conducted in Virginia.
Six faculty and six students representing the Biology Department attended the 84th Annual Meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologist in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Soraya Bartol, Eric Johnson, Deirdre Gonsalves-Jackson, Marielle Postava-Davignon, Maynard Schaus and Victor Townsend co-authored seven presentations on original research on diverse subjects including the biology of plants, mollusks, insects, harvestmen, freshwater turtles, as well as pedagogy.
Oral and Poster Presentation titles included:
Travis Malone taught two masterclasses for high school seniors in the theatre program at the Salem High School Visual and Performing Arts Academy. "Staging Moments and Metaphor" and "Communicating Artistic Vision" were taught in conjunction with 20 student directors currently developing work for the Salem High School Fringe Festival.
Denise Wilkinson presented "Formative Assessment Activities that Engage Students and Support Success" at the national Teaching Academic Success Skills conference in Ft. Lauderdale. Additionally, as a member of the conference advisory committee, Denise completed several conference-related tasks.
Kathleen Casey was the keynote speaker for the Women United chapter of the United Way of South Hampton Roads, held at Norfolk Waterside Marriott.
Kathleen Casey presented work from her forthcoming book "Women and the Power of the Purse" to Assured Partners Women’s Group on International Women’s Day.
Bill McConnell and his partners from Millersville University hosted a NOAA Webinar entitled, “Shared Waters: An upstream, downstream MWEE partnership.” The webinar shared how we are training both pre-service teachers and in-service teachers to support systemic environmental education in local school districts.

Terry Lindvall delivered the keynote address for the 2023 International Symposium on Spaces of Memory at the University of Vienna, speaking on "The Shroud of Cinema: Remembering and Reframing Sacred Space in Silent American Film.”
As a Tidewater Writing Project Teacher Consultant, Mindy Gumpert presented “Spark the Brain-Ignite the Composition" to Virginia Beach and Southhampton public high school teachers. The presentation included peer-to-peer professional learning, classroom resources, and formative assessment tools for writing. The goal of the evidence-based professional development is for teachers to share promising practices with their peers in the pursuit of writing excellence.

Jason Squinobal performed at the Chrysler Museum of Art's premier opening of Preston Singletary's: Raven in the Box of Daylight special exhibit. Squinobal performed acoustic jazz favorites for over 600 attendees accompanied by fellow VWU faculty, Will McPeters and Mike Laubach.

Takeyra Coats received a $2000 grant to develop and implement three presentations and a mini-conference focused around domestic violence and abuse prevention. Coats hosted two domestic violence informational events for VWU students and the Community in February and March. These events provided in-depth knowledge surrounding mental health, abuse, domestic violence, and intimate partner violence.

The recreational therapy students from Kristen Fedesco’s and Takeyra Coats’ classes hosted two events for the Norfolk Therapeutic Recreation Center at Virginia Wesleyan University.

Students in Bill McConnell's EDUC 266 “Classroom Management and Teaching Strategies” developed and led environmental education lessons with 3rd and 4th graders at Norfolk Collegiate school. The lessons were designed to give students background knowledge of their local environment to help them prepare to investigate local environmental issues. It provided a great opportunity for EDUC 266 students to apply classroom management skills as well.
