Kathy Merlock Jackson published a chapter titled "Children’s Live-Action Films" in A Wiley Companion to Children’s- Literature edited by Karen Coats, Deborah Stevenson, and Vivian Yenika-Agbaw. The article addresses children as a consumer audience and shows how the live-action films that they embrace and appear in reflect changes in American culture, media technologies, and children's lives. Sue Larkin has a chapter titled "Growing Up Together: Children's Literature and Women's Studies" in the same volume.

Marielle Postava-Davignon's article highlighting her research on Canada Jays is featured on the front page of the Fall 2022 AMC Maine Chapter Wilderness Matters Newsletter. This newsletter is distributed to all Maine Chapter members of the Appalachian Mountain Club, and is available online.
President Scott D. Miller and Dr. Marylouise Fennell continue to collaborate as Executive Editors on the thought leadership series President to President. The 2022-23 series, titled “The Well Campus: An In-Depth Look,” offers a thoughtful examination of what it means to have a “well” campus. In the first chapter of the 2022-23 series, "Educating for a Civil Society," Western New England University President Robert E. Johnson, Ph.D., explores the importance of helping students engage in civil discourse and maintain mutual respect, even when disagreements arise. President Miller and Dr. Fennell also collaborated on "Why Affordability and Accessibility Are the Cornerstones of a Proactive Enrollment Strategy," recently featured in Enrollment Manager. Benjamin Dobrin and April Christman conducted training for new members of the Chesapeake Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Team. Training focused on responding to and working with suicidal community members in their capacity as crisis negotiators.
Kristen Fedesco was a finalist in two categories of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) Research Institute annual conference in Birmingham, AL. The paper titled "Teletherapy or Just 'Therapy'? Lessons Learned from Working Remotely with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder During Covid-19 School Closures" won second place in the practice category of the conference.
Travis Malone gave a virtual presentation to NACU Honors Directors that explored a mission-driven approach to honors education.

Kellie Holzer devised and convened a virtual roundtable, "What Can Area Studies or Critical Comparativism Offer Victorian Studies?" as part of the VISAWUS series "Victorian Promises" for 2022-2023 (in lieu of an in-person conference). Participants included specialists in the literatures of nineteenth-century Russia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and India.
Sara Sewell presented "Screams: Embodied Affective Expressions Thundering in Holocaust Soundscapes," at the Emotions and Holocaust Studies Virtual Workshop, sponsored by the Buber-Rosenzweig Institut, the Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, & the Fritz Bauer Institut Geschichte und Wirkung des Holocaust.

Takeyra Coats co-hosted the Community Viewing Event for Happy, the BETher short film by La Jill Hunt. The event supported Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. The event included a presentation on the statistics of suicide, suicide prevention and a discussion of impacts amongst the community. Resources were provided for anyone who may be impacted by suicide.
Joyce Easter presented "Designing writing assignments for cognitive skill development" and facilitated the Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) Project workshop "Writing POGIL Activities - An Introduction" at the 27th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education at the Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN.

Amber Gruszecka and Denise Wilkinson presented "Creating Virtual Escape Rooms to Engage Students in Your Classroom" to Mindy Gumpert's SPED 4/540 Assistive Technology for Diverse Learners summer class. Students in the synchronous course at Old Dominion University were very excited to navigate through a virtual escape room and learn how to create a differentiated escape room for students with disabilities.
Bill McConnell presented "Science Simulations" to Mindy Gumpert's SPED 4/540 Assistive Technology for Diverse Learners summer class. Students in the synchronous course at Old Dominion University enjoyed Bill's hands-on activities and the differentiation opportunities for students with disabilities.

Mindy Gumpert was an invited speaker at the Equity and Excellence Summer Conference for Norfolk Public Schools' staff, families, and community members. Her presentation on "Social, Emotional, and Behavioral High-Leverage Practices" offered attendees an opportunity to acquire useful information and resources to promote equity and excellence for all Norfolk Public Schools' students.
President Miller was a panelist on Sodexo’s “Portrait of the Modern Student” webinar, which aired on October 5 and discussed insights from the 2022-23 Student Lifestyle Survey. He was a guest on the New American Colleges & Universities (NACU) Podcast “Connect, Collaborate, Champion!” in an episode titled “A Long-Serving President’s Keys to Success", which aired on September 26.

OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Doug Kennedy's lengthy testimony was cited in the Judge's opinion and confirmation order approving the $2.5 Billion settlement in the Boy Scouts of America's bankruptcy. This will now be reviewed by the Federal District Court where he will appear. Afterward he completed filming in New York City on a Netflix Documentary addressing BSA abuse to be released mid-2023.
Maury Howard was the Co-Principal Investigator for the NSF Award Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) Program: Developing Scientific Practices with Flexible and Inclusive Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences Utilizing Paper Microfluidics.
Joyce Easter was the lead facilitator for and facilitated multiple sessions in the Classroom Facilitation Track and the Activity Writing Track during the POGIL Summer 3-day Workshop at Washington University St. Louis.
Joyce Easter attended the 20th Annual POGIL National Meeting in St. Louis to continue work on the POGIL Project Strategic Plan and is serving on the Advanced Practitioner Experience working group for this academic year.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Students in Mindy Gumpert's EDUC 535 summer course engaged in a field experience at Chesapeake Bay Academy (CBA), a school for students with learning differences. The grad students had an opportunity to play with some of CBA's technology while they were working with CBA students.
Bill McConnell's elementary and special education teaching candidates in EDUC 329 and SPED 384 developed and led hands-on activities for patrons at the NAS Oceana Air Show. Their activities focused on the relationship between mass and force and the how insulators and conductors impact the flow of electricity. They also related their activities to careers in the military.
