Terry Lindvall published “'Saints and Sinners' Tour of Italy” (Reformation Press, 2022) while leading the Galilee Church Pilgrimage to Rome and Beyond, celebrating saints like Clement, Catherine of Siena, and the comic, Philip of Neri, and studying the infamous Medici family while tasting the pasta and wines of Tuscany and beyond (and gazing at Botticelli's paintings a bit too long).

The article, “Worldviews Colliding,” by Eric Mazur was published in Human Rights, a publication of the American Bar Association, in the July 2022 issue. In the article, Mazur examines limitations of the term "religion" in the rights debate between members of the LGBTQ+ community and various conservative religious communities.

Director/editor Stu Minnis and Producer Terry Lindvall finished their feature documentary film, “Hollywood, Teach Us to Pray,” chronicling the nature and functions of prayers in Hollywood films over the last century. It features such directors as Robert Benton (Places in the Heart), David Anspaugh (Hoosiers) and Michael Schultz (Car Wash).

Gavin Pate's short-story collection, Notes from the Coming War, was published in August by Bootstrap Press.

For the last 18 years, President Scott D. Miller has edited President to President with co-editor Dr. Marylouise Fennell, former president of Carlow University and current senior counsel at the Council of Independent Colleges. The complete 2021-2022 series, “The Vitality and Power of Higher Education,” is available for downloading now. The 2022-23 series, titled “The Well Campus: An In-Depth Look,” will offer a thoughtful examination of what it means to have a “well” campus, and the Series Forward, written by Mildred García, Ed.D., president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, is available now. President Miller's column reflecting on Virginia Wesleyan's past, present and future was recently featured in The Virginian-Pilot and the Daily Press. Carol Johnson presented the interactive session “Your Grammar vs. My Grammar vs. Their Grammar: Building an Intergenerational Community” at the annual conference of the Assembly for Teaching English Grammar in Largo, Maryland.

 

Elizabeth Malcolm was a guest panelist on the Atlanta talk radio show “On Point with Juandolyn Stokes” for an episode on "Why Our Community Must Care About Cumulative Impacts of Health Equity, COVID and Extreme Heat."

Eric Mazur spoke to a civic group from the Weinstein Jewish Community Center (Richmond) via Zoom about the 1940 voyage of the SS Quanza, the rescue of its passengers in Norfolk, and the complications related to the involvement of Assistant Secretary of State Breckinridge Long and in determining the actual religious identity of the passengers.

Lisa Lyon Payne and three colleagues co-authored "'We are exhausted!' Student newsrooms in times of COVID," which was presented at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) national conference in Detroit. In a mixed methods survey (N=323), college journalists shared their experiences of working in remote student newsrooms during the COVID-19 campus disruptions.

Stu Minnis presented excerpts from the documentary feature "Hollywood, Teach Us To Pray" at the annual conference of the University Film and Video Association at SUNY-Fredonia.

Clair Berube presented a poster for the Annual National Science Foundation NOYCE Summit, Washington DC. The poster was entitled "Project TEEMS: Training Effective Educators of Math and Science". The poster showcased the new VWU NSF Noyce "Project TEEMS" STEM Teacher Training Grant.

Marielle Postava-Davignon co-organized and presented her work in a symposium entitled "Exploring the intricacies of relationships between social insects and microorganisms" at the International Union for the Study of Social Insects conference in San Diego, CA. This conference takes place once every four years, and is attended by many of the world's foremost experts in the field.

Sara Sewell was selected as a fellow to participate in the Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilization at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.

Taryn Myers was quoted in the IFLScience article "What is the spotlight effect? Why do we get it? And what can we do about it?" 

Stephen Leist has been appointed Assistant Editor of Virginia Libraries, the official journal of the Virginia Library Association, and is already a member of the editorial board.
