World Elder Abuse Awareness Day - June 15

We all age every day. We all know someone in the older population. Abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere, and by anyone. Being aware of the signs and knowing what to do is crucial information for everyone to have. We have to advocate for those who can't speak for themselves. Everyone deserves to feel safe and to be treated with respect.

There are a variety of events happening across the region to highlight World Elder Abuse Awareness. Check out the events below to see what's happening in your area.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day Regional Events

Heat Action Plan Toolkit

With climate change driving more frequent and intense heat events, the state's Heat Action Plan Toolkit aims to help communities adapt and build resilience to extreme heat. Primarily targeted for use by local governments, including health and emergency management departments, the toolkit focuses on approaches to reduce the human health impacts of increasing temperatures and heat waves.

FY 2025-2026 Budget Approved

The Central Pines Regional Council (CPRC) Board of Delegates unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year 2025-2026 Budget at their May 28th meeting. The adopted budget totals $36,359,099, with the membership dues rate remaining unchanged. The budget reflects a clear and strategic financial plan to guide the organization through changing federal funding dynamics while maintaining high-quality service delivery across the region.

UNC School of Government School for New Finance Officers

The School for New Finance Officers is a year-long program designed for local government finance officers in North Carolina who are newly serving in the role—generally within their first three years. This course provides a strong foundation in public finance, along with practical tools and peer support to help participants thrive in this critical position.

The program begins with a two-day, in-person kickoff in Chapel Hill on September 29–30, 2025, and concludes with a final in-person session and graduation in August 2026. Between these in-person sessions, participants will meet virtually (via Zoom) one day each month in October, November, January, February, March, April, May, June, and July (for approximately ½ to ¾ day sessions).

Topics covered include:

  • Budget development and financial planning
  • Accounting and financial reporting
  • Internal controls and risk management
  • Pre-audit and disbursement processes
  • The annual audit
  • Revenue sources and grant management
  • Planning and funding capital projects
  • Payroll and personnel finance

The course emphasizes the development of practical tools and templates that can be applied immediately to improve finance office operations. Participants will also receive a wealth of resources—checklists, guides, sample documents, and more—that they can use right away to strengthen internal processes, improve compliance, and support their staff.

In addition, the course includes sessions on managing people effectively and working successfully with governing boards, recognizing that strong leadership and communication skills are essential to the finance officer role.

By stretching the course over a full year, participants gain time to absorb and apply the material while forming a cohort experience and lasting professional network with peers from across the state.

Cost: $975 per person (for the full year)

Registration: Opening Soon

CPRC Out & About

Our C&ED team (Community & Economic Development) recently took a trip to the Durham Waste Disposal and Recycling Center. They learned all about how Durham works to educate the public and protect the environment by handling our waste disposal with innovative and efficient methods. Special shoutout to their excellent tour guide Muriel Williams!

Tyler Queen coordinates a regional group of solid waste professionals from several CRPC members. If you'd like more information on this group, send him an email at tqueen@centralpinesnc.gov.
