A Word from Andrew... Pregnant with Possibilities...
Dear Pine Street Church Members and Friends,
At the heart of Christmas is the wonder of the Incarnation---that God became flesh--that spirit and matter united and that divinity and humanity are entwined in the fully God and fully human Jesus. This is "salvation with skin on it."
Christmas is the feast in which we celebrate the miracle of materiality that God loved human beings so much that God became one through the flesh, blood, bones, and vulnerability of the baby born in Bethlehem.
This wonder is gloriously described in Denise Levertov's poem "The Annunication":
to bear in her womb
Infinite weight and lightness; to carry in hidden, finite inwardness, nine months of Eternity; to contain in slender vase of being, the sum of power- in narrow flesh, the sum of light.
Then bring to birth, push out into air, a Man-child needing, like any other, milk and love-
but who was God.
This entire month of Advent the wisdom of Holy Scripture and the daily practices from our Mason Jar Advent series have led us to wait, to listen, to be open; to
do something every day that pushes out into the world some meaning or fulfillment, no matter how
great or small. To be present enough to our lives that we can embody (incarnate) God's presence in the weal and woe and warp and woof of our everyday.
Just two days more and we will finally be able to celebrate the magic and miracle and birth of the Babe from Bethlehem. The long wait is almost over. God is starting to show and the moments ahead of us are pregnant with possibilities!
Could it be that we are starting to show, too? Could it be that we, too, are about to give birth to a new year, a new decade, a new dream, a new way of being, and a new way of living that we've only begun to imagine?
Join us
TOMORROW at one of our Christmas Eve services (4pm or 6pm) as we celebrate the birth of the newborn God among us and anticipate something new being born in our own hearts.
My dearly beloved Pine-heads, Christ is being born anew. Let us make room for what's new, because in the words of Jesuit priest Walter Burghardt, "
this very moment, for all its imperfection and frustration, because of its imperfection and frustration, is pregnant with all sorts of possibilities, is pregnant with the future, is pregnant with love, is pregnant with Christ."
Expectantly,
Andrew
